Canadian airlines continue to cancel flights by the hundreds following a record-breaking snowstorm that blasted southern Ontario and Quebec on Sunday and Monday before whirling farther east. After hundreds of cancellations on Sunday, aviation analytics firm Cirium says roughly 300 more flights across the country had been called off as of 9 a.m., affecting tens of thousands of travellers. Toronto's Pearson airport saw 146 departures cancelled, while the Montreal, Ottawa and Halifax airports had 92 nixed flights combined.

Mark Carney has been circling the globe on government aircraft since becoming prime minister — part of his efforts to secure new trade links and investment to double non-U.S. exports in the next decade. In just the first month of this year, he visited France, China, Qatar and Switzerland. The Prime Minister's Office seldom confirms trips months in advance, and summit plans may change given the current geopolitical tumult.

International trade experts say U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest threat to impose 100 per cent tariffs on Canada will hurt his own economy just as much, if not more, than Canada’s. They say that means Trump may ultimately seek an off-ramp to avoid the economic damage, similar to walking back threats to impose tariffs on eight European countries last week if Denmark didn’t hand over ownership of Greenland to the U.S.

Cole Carey learned quickly to keep his mouth shut when skiing in the snowy wake of a galloping horse: there’s the danger of snow, ice and the occasional flavour of animal droppings dusted into the air. Carey is what's called a slider in skijoring, a winter sport that could be the seasonal alternative to water skiing — substituting water for snow, a wetsuit for a snowsuit, and a boat for a one-horsepower steed.

Prime Minister Mark Carney's call at the World Economic Forum for middle powers to band together against economic coercion by "great powers" is winning some cross-partisan support at home and garnering attention worldwide. The speech — which the Prime Minister's Office confirmed Carney wrote himself — painted a grim picture of a world in which global powers are increasingly using economic dominance for political coercion, and in which countries like Canada cannot continue to pretend that the way things used to be is the way they will ever be again.

The first of more than two dozen recall petitions launched against members of Alberta's legislature has come up short. Jenny Yeremiy submitted her petition against Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides to Elections Alberta on Tuesday, but said she needed thousands more signatures. She says the campaign collected about 6,500 signatures, well short of its required 16,000. The petition was launched in October and, if successful, would have forced a constituency-wide vote on whether Nicolaides should lose his seat in the legislature.

Experts say Canada's presence at the World Economic Forum is even more important this year, with Prime Minister Mark Carney's pitch to expand global trade relationships, especially as rhetoric from U.S. President Donald Trump threatens to "hijack" the annual meeting. The conference in Davos, Switzerland, brings together politicians and wealthy corporate leaders to discuss global affairs and economic development, but Ivey Business School fellow Mahmood Nanji says the latest edition "takes on a different kind of meaning" amid global conflict and economic upheaval.

Inflation rises to 2.4% in December in ‘tax holiday’ rebound: StatCan
Statistics Canada says the end of the federal government’s tax holiday a year earlier pushed the annual pace of inflation up two ticks to 2.4 per cent in December. A poll of economists heading into Monday’s data release had expected the annual inflation rate to hold steady at 2.2 per cent. StatCan said Ottawa’s move to take GST off some items for two months starting mid-December in 2024 dropped prices for dining out, alcohol, children’s toys and more a year earlier, but those discounts fell out of the annual comparison and pushed the consumer price index higher to end the year.
