The Battle of Trajan’s Gate (986 CE) was a unique and dramatic moment in the reign of Emperor Basil II.

This was the most humiliating defeat of Basil’s early reign and a catalyst for his subsequent determination to crush the Bulgarian state.

Coloring process from my graphic novel “Basil Basileus”. It’s about the early life of the Byzantine(Roman) emperor Basil II. In this scene he is negotiating with the ambassador of the Buyids of Baghdad. This meeting was actually recorded by this ambassador. His name was In Sahram.

Empress Theophano. 10th cen.

Her story reminds a Cinderella story going terribly wrong.

Cover for my graphic novel Theophano: A Byzantine Tale.

My take of Kosmas Indikopleustes. He was a Byzantine from Alexandria Egypt. He travelled as far as India and Sri Lanka recording all his travels in a book written in Greek called “Christian Topography”.

That’s a drawing I made about a graphic novel regarding the history of the Hellenistic far east. Soon it will be available in English too.

Diodotos I was the first king of the Hellenistic kingdom of Bactria in the far east. Bactria covered the area of modern Afghanistan Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

The palace of Constantinople had a building called Chrysotriclinos. Historians claim that the architecture of the palatine chapel of Aachen is influenced by it. It was circular, full mosaics and had a throne with a holy bible on top. The emperor would sit next to it on a chair called sellion.

A drawing I made of Alexander the Great and Roxanne. They got married in the depths of Asia.

Roxanne was thedaughter of a Bactrian noble. She produced an heir (Alexander IV) who fell victim to the machinations of the diadochi.

During the events in Basil Basileus comic book series, there are constantly two or three pretenders to the throne and dangerous enemies beyond the Byzantine borders. As if this is not enough, the palace aristocracy lead by his uncle is trying to convert him into a puppet emperor. #byzantine #history

Here’s an old illustration of mine. It features the forum of Theodosius in Constantinople. The Byzantine officer armour is inspired by a Byzantine icon. It could only be characterized as parade armor.
