If you’ve ever browsed a tech forum or Linux group, you’ve probably seen the same question pop up again and again: “I’m switching from Windows to Linux… which distro should I use?” It’s a fair question — but also the wrong first question. There's a growing interest in switching to Linux recently, with Windows 10 nearing its end of life (EOL)

Enabling Automatic Updates on openSUSE Tumbleweed
openSUSE Tumbleweed is a rolling-release Linux distribution well-known for its stability, thanks in part to its use of Btrfs snapshots. By enabling transactional updates, users can upgrade the system atomically — updates are applied in a separate snapshot, and only take effect after a reboot. This model dramatically improves reliability and rollback safety. I have now tested this in both Slowroll, and Tumbleweed and so far is working very well.

Why openSUSE’s New Agama Installer Is Better Than YaST
openSUSE has long been known for its technical excellence, enterprise-grade tools, and robust community. One of its most defining tools, YaST (Yet another Setup Tool), has served as the backbone of openSUSE’s installation and system configuration process for decades. But as the Linux world evolves toward cloud-native, immutable, and automated deployments, the old YaST installer has started to show its age.

Agama, openSUSE's new installer, just dropped v.16. There's a lot of nice additions to the new version but the one that stands out is the addition of several openSUSE products on the selection list, including Kalpa, the kde version of MicroOS.

Governments Around the World Are Switching to Linux
In recent years, governments across the globe have been increasingly adopting Linux-based operating systems in place of proprietary platforms like Microsoft Windows. From cost savings and improved security to digital sovereignty and vendor independence, the motivations are varied—but the trend is clear: open source is gaining serious ground in the public sector. I did a side by side comparison of Yast and Agama installers. I was actually surprised at the results. Both installers are the netinstall versions.

Gaming on Tumbleweed with SELinux
So, for the record I had a perfectly working install of Tumbleweed on my laptop, previously installed with apparmor on it before they switched to SELinux. Everything was working great, including games like Magic: The Gathering Arena. But, as a good Linux tester (especially on behalf of openSUSE) that will never do. I've been hearing complaints about SELinux not letting games run, even after the fix was pushed (selinux-policy-targeted-gaming).

openSUSE Tumbleweed SELinux and Gaming fix is now in
The big controversy over openSUSE Tumbleweed changing from apparmor to SELinux should be coming to an end soon. The devs have been working hard to get a fix pushed that will allow anyone installing wine, proton, lutris, etc to be able to use these game packages without issue. The new fix is a package that modifies SELinux remain in 'strict' mode while simultaneously allowing gaming to work.

Set up a printer Cronjob and bash script, step by step in detail
Daughter asked if there was a way to set up her new inkjet printer to print once a week to prevent the printer heads from drying out, much like her last printer had done. She really doesn't want to buy a printer again just because she didn't use it enough. I said "Absolutely. I can just set up a cronjob to print to it from my Linux computer and schedule that to print once a week.
