Noted this on the pod but feels very relevant after the Hawks couldn't score last night.

Trae Young has played in ~15% of Atlanta's minutes this season.

In the other ~85% of minutes, ATL has an ugly 112.5 offensive rating.

That would rank 25th in the NBA.

Very real questions on offense.
January 6, 2026 at 12:47 PM
Tonight was the 2nd-worst offensive rating (94.3) of the season for the Hawks.

Only narrowly ahead of the drubbing against San Antonio on Dec. 19

The Hawks played pretty solid basketball in the 2nd half tonight, but they were down 12 at halftime so "pretty solid basketball" wasn't enough.

Atlanta finishes 0-4 vs. Toronto this season and drops to 17-21 on the year.

Locked On Hawks podcast breakdown to come, headlined by Trae Young buzz.

Risacher fouled out with 4:38 to go but, prior to that, the 2nd half tonight might've been his best overall half of the season.
January 6, 2026 at 2:50 AM
Zaccharie Risacher has 13 points in the second half.

He's been encouragingly aggressive.
January 6, 2026 at 2:43 AM
4th straight game (with an injury absence in between) in which Luke Kennard has given the Hawks really good minutes and been in the role that he was originally pitched to be in when ATL signed him.
January 6, 2026 at 2:34 AM
7-0 run to begin Q4 for the Hawks.

Back-to-back driving buckets for Dyson and a 3 from Kennard.

Atlanta within 6 for the first time in the second half.
January 6, 2026 at 2:32 AM
The good -- The Hawks clearly played better in Q3.

The bad -- They didn't make up any ground on the scoreboard and trail by 13.
January 6, 2026 at 2:28 AM
Hawks have played only 8.5 guys tonight, essentially.

Mo Gueye got less than 3 minutes in the 4th big role.

No Asa Newell.

No Keaton Wallace.
January 6, 2026 at 2:19 AM
9 points in about 5 minutes for Zaccharie Risacher to open the second half, including a 3 to get the Hawks back within 10.
January 6, 2026 at 2:09 AM
Ugly first half on the whole for the Hawks.

Went down 15 right away, clawed back within 3, but then gave back most of the gains in the final 6-7 minutes of the second quarter.

Down 12 at the break in Toronto after a buzzer-beater from NAW.
January 6, 2026 at 1:44 AM
I love Collin Murray-Boyles.

(but that's been the case for about 2 years now)
January 6, 2026 at 1:32 AM
It has not been a banner 6 quarters for Okongwu in Toronto.
January 6, 2026 at 1:31 AM
4 fouls in 8 minutes for Risacher.

He averages 2.1 fouls per game.
January 6, 2026 at 1:19 AM
Mo Gueye getting the first crack at the 4th big minutes.

(Note: Asa Newell hasn't had a DNP since Dec. 5)
January 6, 2026 at 1:14 AM
Hawks were down as many as 15 but closed the gap with a 10-0 run late in the first quarter.

ATL shot 32% in the opening period but only down 5.
January 6, 2026 at 1:08 AM
This is the first Porzingis + Okongwu stint since KP came back from the extended absence.
January 6, 2026 at 1:04 AM
Hawks down 15-4 to begin the game and a very early timeout.

Atlanta is 1-6 from the field with 2 turnovers.
January 6, 2026 at 12:47 AM
Think it's the right decision from Snyder to not immediately pull Risacher with 2 fouls.

Not a high-foul player (2.1 per game) and no reason to automatically bench him, especially when he doesn't play 30+ minutes a game anyway.
January 6, 2026 at 12:46 AM
Notable that my guy Bob Rathbun said on the TV broadcast that Onyeka Okongwu was "sick as a dog" on Saturday when the Hawks lost to the Raptors.

(Might explain what was a very rough game for him)
January 6, 2026 at 12:43 AM
Hawks roster breakdown tonight against Toronto:

STARTERS — Daniels, NAW Risacher, Johnson, Okongwu

Bench: Porzingis, Krejci, Kennard, Gueye, Newell, Wallace, Houstan

OUT: Young, Dante

G League: Dennis, Đurišić, Williams

(yes, there's still a game tonight!)
January 6, 2026 at 12:10 AM
I am not in Toronto, but I'm told Trae Young was just shooting on the floor before tonight's game.

(He's already been ruled out with the quad contusion)
January 6, 2026 at 12:04 AM
I totally understand the reactions I'm seeing from fans.

I really do.

But I think people are going to need to reconcile that whatever trade return might come for Trae Young is just not going to be robust.

(And it's still a "might" and an "if" at this point, for the record)

UPDATE: Stein has edited the language on the initial report.

Now reads…

“it remains to be seen whether the Hawks would also have to send the Wizards draft capital as a measure to convince them to absorb Young's contract or if Washington would be making a direct play for Young”
Just seeing now that @thesteinline.bsky.social reported “it's believed that the Hawks would also have to send the Wizards draft capital to convince them to absorb Young's contract”

I have heard the same in my calls this afternoon.

(BIG CAVEAT: That does NOT mean the Hawks will do this)
