The Bead Society of Great Britain, (formed in September 1989), is a subscription-based, non-profitmaking, non-commercial venture run by a permanent Team who work voluntarily. The Society is open to all those who have an appreciation, either private or professional, of beads ancient and modern, of all shapes, sizes, materials and colours; their techniques of manufacture, and their application. The aim of our Society is to encourage and share knowledge and enjoyment of every type of bead, to improve the accuracy of information and the skills of making, using, caring for and collecting beads, together with the understanding of the many peoples for whom beads are so important in their lives. Members receive three issues per year of the highly-acclaimed Journal The Society currently holds two-three meetings each year - lectures/workshops and an AGM. We have a varied program of courses, meetings and workshops, most are FREE to members. The Society numbers among its members private collectors, researchers, dealers, jewellery makers, bead embroiderers, beadwork weavers (on and off-loom), makers of beads, and many others, so there's a place for everyone!

A group of hanging bobbins, 19thC/20thC Sold at auction by Bonhams, Oxford, 1 July 2015, clickable link in-post Photos and Text by Bonhams A large group of mainly East Midlands spangled bobbins, 19thC/20thC Sold at auction by Bonhams, Oxford, 1 July 2015, clickable link in-post Photos and Text by Bonhams Hanging bobbins were created as souvenirs for the hangings of murderers, including: Joseph Castle who murdered his wife and was hanged at Bedford Gaol in 1860; William Worsley who murdered a man in Luton and was the last man to be publicly hanged at Bedford in 1868; and William Bull who brutally murdered Sarah Marshall, a 'half-witted' old woman, whilst drunk, and was hanged in 1871. Sold at auction by Bonhams, Oxford, 1 July 2015, clickable link . Photos and Text by Bonhams A large group of mainly East Midlands spangled bobbins, 19thC/20thC Comprised of three bone hanging bobbins, 'Joseph Castle hung 1860', 'William Worsley hung 1868' and 'W. Bull hung 1871'; ten bone bobbins featuring inscriptions, including 'X U are and X U B and doble X U are to me', 'My hart is all ways roveing after the lad I love', 'Love me or leave me alone' and a further six featuring names and dates; fourteen bone bobbins featuring names; twelve decorated bone bobbins, including dyed examples and others decorated with pewter bands, brass wire, spiral bound beads and one with four jingles; a group of 19th century wood bobbins, including spliced examples, tigers, leopards and wire bound bobbins; one loose spangle ring with a Kitty Fisher bead; together with nine ivory bobbins and group of decorated modern wood bobbins; seven Belgian wood bobbins; a group of small East Midlands bobbins; three glass bobbins, one containing a long red bead and one containing pins and needles; a group of modern wood bobbins for metallic lacemaking; and a Brussels Duchesse collar with a Point de Gaze insert and a small Bedfordshire lace mat. Although perhaps not leading fashion in the 1920s, Worth was by no means stuck in the past and followed the emerging trends, as this 1925 evening dress shows. It is a classic "flapper" dress with its low waist, a boxy, draped silhouette, and gorgeous, extensive beadwork.

European trading beads, like these from Austria, were made to African tastes and often imitated materials already valued ornamentally. Mass produced, tiny and portable, these unassuming objects helped build empires, being traded for goods, spices and enslaved people.

Roman faience beads, found along the Silk Road in Afghanistan.
“Roman” means that the beads were produced within the boundaries of the Roman Empire between 100 BC and 400 AD. This includes factories in Europe but also in Egypt and Syria.
