The Bead Society of Great Britain, (formed in September 1989), is a subscription-based, non-profitmaking, non-commercial venture run by a permanent Team who work voluntarily. The Society is open to all those who have an appreciation, either private or professional, of beads ancient and modern, of all shapes, sizes, materials and colours; their techniques of manufacture, and their application. The aim of our Society is to encourage and share knowledge and enjoyment of every type of bead, to improve the accuracy of information and the skills of making, using, caring for and collecting beads, together with the understanding of the many peoples for whom beads are so important in their lives. Members receive three issues per year of the highly-acclaimed Journal The Society currently holds two-three meetings each year - lectures/workshops and an AGM. We have a varied program of courses, meetings and workshops, most are FREE to members. The Society numbers among its members private collectors, researchers, dealers, jewellery makers, bead embroiderers, beadwork weavers (on and off-loom), makers of beads, and many others, so there's a place for everyone!

Although perhaps not leading fashion in the 1920s, Worth was by no means stuck in the past and followed the emerging trends, as this 1925 evening dress shows. It is a classic "flapper" dress with its low waist, a boxy, draped silhouette, and gorgeous, extensive beadwork.

European trading beads, like these from Austria, were made to African tastes and often imitated materials already valued ornamentally. Mass produced, tiny and portable, these unassuming objects helped build empires, being traded for goods, spices and enslaved people.

“Roman” means that the beads were produced within the boundaries of the Roman Empire between 100 BC and 400 AD. This includes factories in Europe but also in Egypt and Syria.

Horn Pendant Necklace, Canaanite, circa 1600 BCE Gold pendants in the shape of a pair of horns or a crescent moon appear in Canaan during the Late Bronze Age and became popular throughout the ancient world. The Horn Pendant Necklace contains carnelian, red jasper, and gold beads, which are offset by lotus seed vessel and gold tubular beads. This necklace duplicates jewellery elements found in a Late Bronze Age jar from Beth-Shemesh, Israel. Source : The Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University, Atlantic, Georgia, USA.
