So: In 2017, Congress made this happen:

NIH: Proposed 22% cut --> 9% increase
NSF: Proposed 11% cut --> 4% increase
NOAA: Proposed 16% cut --> 4% increase

Obviously, 2025 is not 2017. A lot is diff now. But still:

💰 Congress, not WH, sets budgets.

📞 Public support & calls to Congress matter.

And the hits keep coming. NSF just cancelled the Louise Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation grant at the CSU. Since its inception in 1993, CSU-LSAMP has served ~30,000 @calstate.bsky.social students (2000/yr), working to increase graduation rates & broaden participation in STEM careers. 🧪

This was an incredible, international, tree-of-life spanning collaborative effort led by @roseamarks.bsky.social. I had fun and it was great model for how we can start to reach across disciplinary barriers and silos. @naturecomms.bsky.social #interdisciplinary

1. For the past thirty years I've had the best job in the world.

I've had the opportunity to follow my curiosity; explore the workings of nature and society; mentor students and junior colleagues in the same process; and teach generations of students about it all.

Here is a short video about the work that is still being done at SFSU but that will soon grind to a halt. In this video are my amazing colleagues in the chem and bio departments and two impressive students (one of them was in my lab).

The latest NIH grant chaos:

NIH apparently sent stop-work orders to all *97* MARC and U-RISE programs in the country.

These programs support underrepresented undergrads interested in health research careers.

MARC dates to 1977. Over 48 years, the programs have supported thousands of students.
New this evening (3/28): Major update in NIH grant termination numbers.

❌ 695 NIH grants now terminated (up from 429)
❌ 232 on HIV/AIDS
❌ 44 on cancer
❌ 28 on Alzheimer's
❌ 123 on Covid*

*And this doesn't count cancelled non-NIH Covid grants.

HUGE THANKS to @noamross.net for pushing the updates!

Thanks to the amazing generosity of our donors, we’ve surpassed our initial goal! We’d love to keep the momentum going, and every extra dollar we can raise goes directly to support more students, more research and more ways to transform lives. Please consider a gift to reach our next goal of $4000!

There’s still time to donate to #GatorsGiveDay!

Your support will allow students to do class experiments like this one we did in the greenhouse with the Three Sisters (corn 🌽, beans 🫛, and squash 🎃).
