Unless I’m using photo references, all my traditional cat paintings start like this: a sloppy scribble on my computer. I’m thrilled to say I’m no longer drawing with a mouse, as I did for decades. I finally have a Wacom tablet and pen. Drawing is fun again!

Once I get the expression, pose, and proportions right, I refine and refine the sketch. From there, I may transfer it to an art panel or canvas to work out colors and values. More often, I’ll do a full-color study first. That way, when I pick up a paintbrush, all I need to focus on is color mixing and brushstrokes. #art #painting #drawing #wacom #digitalart #traditionalart #wip

A polymer clay WIP of a small mermaid cat. A mold will be made of it when it's done, and I will cast resin copies from that mold. Sculpting this prototype is half the challenge—the other half of the challenge will be making a decent mold. My brain is already considering how I will cut the mold, and where the vents shall be.

I was damn proud of this painting when I finished it. It captured the true spirit of litter box cleaning: two cats waiting for the box to be fresh, so they can christen it with poop ... while their owner looks heavenward like she might puke.

I even pushed myself stylistically, letting shapes melt into each other, creating vanishing edges. Which sounds easy, but was maddeningly hard for me. Of course, when I proudly put it up for auction, it closed at… $25. Yep. Twenty-five bucks. I hated it after that. I decided it was a bad painting. Years later, I know better. It’s not bad. In fact, it’s perfect—for a bathroom or laundry room. At the time, only one buyer shared my appreciation for potty humor.
