Lambeth will remember the men and women who fought and gave their lives in British, Commonwealth and empire armed services in six ceremonies marking Remembrance Sunday (9 November). Brixton’s Windrush Square will again host a service, honouring Caribbean and African service personnel, jointly organised by the West Indian Association of Service Personnel (WASP), Friends of Windrush Square (FoWS), the Black Cultural Archives (BCA), the Ministry of Defence (MOD), and Lambeth council.

More than 150 members of the housing campaign group HASL yesterday (29 October) protested outside Lambeth council's housing office against “cruel new bullying tactics”. People from Lambeth who have been housed in temporary accommodation outside the borough were joined by other families from Westminster, Enfield, Haringey, Hackney, Hammersmith and Fulham, Waltham Forest, Islington, Croydon, Lewisham, Hounslow, Greenwich, Dartford, and Southwark – all facing the same stressful circumstances.

Mémoires des corps , in Gasworks gallery, is the first UK exhibition of Paris-based artist, Marie-Claire Messouma Manlanbien. The beaded hangings in gentle colours and hand thrown ceramics create a first impression of tranquil harmony. A Brixton gift card backed by the Brixton Business Improvement District (BID), with financial support from Brixton Brewery, Morleys department store and Brixton Village, will launch in time for Christmas. The cards are part of a programme run by a Scotland-based company. Both physical and digital versions will be available. The “Gift Brixton”cards will be accepted at participating local businesses.

The Saying and the Said is the new show in Brixton’s Studio 73, featuring the work of London-based artists Katy Binks and Lucy Spanyol. These artists offer two different approaches to what might be called visual speech - where gesture, image, and mark-making create their own forms of language. Lucy Spanyol’s delicate watercolours occupy the space between figuration and abstraction.

A second “adult gambling centre” in Brixton is seeking a licence enabling it to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Lambeth council’s licensing sub-committee will consider the application from the Admiral “casino” at 510 Brixton Road, near its junction with Acre Lane, on Wednesday (29 October). In a landmark event, a major exhibition celebrating the Windrush Generation that originated in Brixton opened today (21 October) at the headquarters of the Home Office in London. The HQ, on Marsham Street in Westminster, was at the heart of the Windrush scandal that saw many people with the right to live in the UK exiled, prevented from earning a living and denied NHS treatment and benefits they had paid for through tax and National Insurance.

Meat maestros Whole Beast have announced via Instragram that they are opening a restaurant at 336 Coldharbour Lane – former home of Shrub and Shutter – in November. With a Peckham Rye pub residency favourably reviewed by local resident and food critic Jay Rayner last year, and a National Burger Award, owners Sam Bryant and Alicja Specjalna are taking the next step.

Summer Nights at Kennington’s Durning Library is the new show by local artist Olympia Alsawi. Now based in London, Olympia grew up in Barcelona with Palestinian-Lebanese and Congolese roots. Her work reflects her experiences of racial and gender stereotypes. There are twelve oil and mixed media works in the exhibition which showcase Olympia’s use of strong but muted colours and her confident technique.

Atlantic Road Lambeth council today (9 October) announced that is has appointed architects to develop a “community led” strategy for “public spaces and community life” in Brixton town centre. The move comes after years of increasing concern about anti-social behaviour and worse in the town centre, as well as complaints from businesses about the effects of a low traffic neighbourhood (LTN) preventing through traffic along Railton and part of Atlantic Road.
