Phew, this is a relief. Posting to social media is actually a non-trivial source of stress in my life, so having one less thing to worry about would be a load off. Bye everyone!

Building off yesterday's post about player buy-in:

"What if I have a character concept I really like, but the DM won't change their game to allow it?"

Well, you've got three options.

Some days, you eat Spaghettios for breakfast like you're an eight-year-old. For me, that day is "Tuesday."

Happy Tuesday, everyone.

If you're a D&D player, your job is to create a character who is willing to run the presented content. Don't roll up a character who looks at the DM's prepared dungeon and goes, "Nah."

This isn't railroading. This is respecting your friend's time and energy. Plus, you'll have fun!

The correct answer here is: close the books, thank them for coming, and ask what they'd like to do instead.

If players ignore *everything* you've prepped, they're not interested in playing the game you're offering. DMs burn out every day trying to appeal to players who won't buy in.

I don't know what "retro" means, but I know it doesn't mean "old". We don't call Shakespeare retro, or Groucho Marx, or the Beatles. Most old media is not retro.

Anyway, I've made my peace with the Wii and Xbox 360 being old. But that doesn't make them "retro". We can talk about the PS2, maybe.

"Why play 5e when another system does [thing] better?"

Because while [thing] is great, I don't want it exclusively. I want to run a jewel heist this week, a jungle hexcrawl next week, a tense political banquet the week after. And then maybe go after a dragon in a gods-honest dungeon.

Here's a short list of rad things from our D&D table in the past few years:

- pop-up book of the PCs' travels
- gay pirate wedding
- fought a gazebo
- Amish wickerball
- mapped the planet from orbit
- nice picnic with Strahd
- entire dungeon in a guy's butt
- stick bug robot

My meatspace group is pretty casual. This past year we've played Lancer, Broken Compass, Vampire, Darkest House, and of course 5e. We're pretty excited to play whatever someone feels like running. I go back 20+ years with one of these guys, and we've tried out dozens of systems in that time.

There's a lot of this on Bluesky. Some days it feels like half of the D&D feed is just this sort of awful negativity. It'd be nicer for everyone if these folks spent their energy championing the games they do like, rather than tearing down people for playing the one they don't.
"Genuinely cannot bring myself to believe there are people out there who actually prefer D&D to other systems, it's so bad."

That's a snippet from a thread that came across my feed today, filled with this weird negativity and elitism. It's a growing problem with TTRPGs in general, I've observed.

Whenever someone mentions a thing you can't do with D&D, my immediate thought is, "You can totally do that with D&D."

And, quite often, my second thought is, "I have a fond memory of a time where I did that in D&D."

My third thought is usually about how I could go for a sandwich.

There's a rhetorical device I use: "On a scale of 1 to 10, how much risk are you willing to accept here?" That's their signal that they're about to head off the rails.

Of course the most common response is "ELEVEN." Because my players are lovable psychopaths.
What the DM thought he was asking was “Do you want to do this reckless activity?”

What we thought he was asking was “Do you accept this invitation to stay longer and play Dungeons and Dragons?”

This left me feeling like I was being punished for trying to be a good player and stay on the rails.

A pet peeve of mine in fantasy: using a character's race as a primary descriptor. The author I'm reading now constantly refers to main characters as "the halfling" and "the gnome".

We don't see this in non-fantasy as much, characters thinking of themselves as "the botanist" or "the 29-year-old".

MINORITY OPINION:
I like an exclamation-first interrobang: '!?'. Puts the straight edge against the sentence, then curves pleasantly away from it. The more popular '?!' strikes me as aesthetically confused. But I think we can all agree it's a good thing the combined '‽' never caught on. Yeesh.

Reading through Blades in the Dark. Demon-haunted Victorian-era city where the player characters pull heists to build their criminal empire. The mechanics seem overly-fiddly for my taste, but I'm interested to see how they work in practice. Seems like it's a game that fills its niche well.
October 29, 2025 at 10:05 AM
I've done it and it works great. The PCs were all members of the same noble house, and then they got sucked into Ravenloft. Shenanigans ensued, Azalin got pissed, one of them turned into a werewolf, you know how it goes.
October 28, 2025 at 4:23 PM
I had my players fight a full-sized gazebo mimic. I gave it the stat block of a rhinoceros.
"I shoot the gazebo" an actual phrase used early in tonight's D&D session, much to the GM and the rest of the party's amusement.

Everyone got the reference.

I'm seeing people post "here's 10 games to get to know me!" and honestly there's no point in me doing that, since eight of them would be various remakes of the original Final Fantasy, one would be Bionic Commando, and one would be Princess Maker 2.
