I find myself agreeing with Councillor Healy Rae. Integrating the rail, road, and air infra makes a lot of sense. One other thing I'd add is the need for passing loops / double track on sections of the Mallow to Tralee railway to ramp up its capacity.

High tide in Limerick City this morning. The construction works are flood defences. They'll be needed sooner rather than later.

This really does sound like great news for the city. Credit to all who were involved in making it happen. I'm not aware of the company but these read as very high skilled roles. Ideally, most of those who fill them will live in or near the city centre.

Politicians in Counties Clare and Limerick have some explaining to do. It was announced today that Cork is getting massive rail investment through the National Development Plan while the Midwest is getting nothing at all. Did our politicians even lobby for it?

"what was once a safe road"

What does that mean?

Was it safe for children walking and cycling, for example?

There is nobody that I'm aware of who is joining the dots between our economic model and the destruction of nature quite as well as Aislínn Kelly is. This thoughtful and articulate opinion piece deserves to be widely read.

Was delighted to meet the one and only @thinkorswim.bsky.social at O'Mahony's Bookshop in Limerick last night. John was there to talk about his new book "The Lie of the Land". I've only just started into it but going by the great discussion last night I think it will be very worth reading.

I don't see a compelling argument here. The good folks of Ranelagh and Rathmines are doing such low mileage that switching to EVs won't make any dent on carbon emissions.

This is pretty big news for public transport in the Midwest. When Dublin Coach first came on the scene they revolutionised bus travel between Kerry, Clare, Limerick and Dublin. But the service deteriorated dramatically in recent years. Hopefully it'll improve again now.

This opinion piece in yesterday's Irish Times could be better, to say the least. There are arguments against these kinds of EV chargers that have nothing to do with aesthetics even if that might be where many objectors are coming from.

Ireland, I have often thought smugly since my return from California, wouldn’t tolerate such pretentious, self-destructive nonsense as a ban on clothes lines. Enter the row over EV charging arms

It's obviously not just a 'legal hurdle' that can be overcome with another cut at planning. Clearly there's a substantive problem with the project but neither the politicians nor those interviewing them want to engage with that.

I'm seeing a few news reports lately which purport to be about road safety but might they be veiled attempts by hedge cutting contractors to get business from Councils? If the concern is road safety surely the main ask would be for motorists to drive carefully?

This was published yesterday morning. Later yesterday an elderly woman was killed by a young man driving a tractor in County Clare. There is no doubt that tractors are bigger and faster than ever before and they pose a real risk to other road users.
