After reading most of the Saints of Steel (ok, 1-3), I am cleaning up the rest of the World of the White Rat books. I think Swordheart is next! Fantasy romance is so incredibly soothing.
"I have the challenge of reviewing a novel that exemplifies what is best in Kingfisher’s work."

@hawkwinglb.bsky.social reviews T. Kingfisher's Swordheart, a sword and sorcery romance originally published in 2018 and reintroduced this year:

I was listening to Knowledge Fight's breakdown of Alex Jones's End Game yesterday and at one point Jones was describing the dystopia he imagined the "globalists" would impose, where people would be stripped of their citizenship and shipped off to megaprisons without due process.

WELL I guess I have my work cut out for me. Still waiting on that new Joe Abercrombie book, though. 👀

In case anyone was wondering, my fantasy novel mania origin story is that I did my MA thesis on servicemen's amateur photography practices in Iraq/Afghanistan and ended up reading like 20+ books about really brutal shit and once it was completed, I needed magic and dragons. Like, 15 years' worth.

Finally getting around to V.E. Schwab's Shades of Magic trilogy after accidentally reading the The Fragile Threads of Power first. I am hype to finally get some deeper context and spend more time with my favorite characters. #booksky

"A Drop of Corruption" by Robert Jackson Bennett was everything I'd been hoping for in a sequel. Din is the troubled bisexual protagonist I need in my life and his and Ana's latest investigation was the perfect setting to start revealing secrets about their characters and the empire itself. #booksky

I recently finished "The Witness for the Dead" and "The Angel of Crows," both by Katherine Addison. I found the former to have the same soothing vibe as "The Goblin Emperor" (which I liked quite a bit) and the interweaving of the various mysteries was clever and entertaining. #booksky

I just finished "Blood Over Bright Haven" by M. L. Wang and it is already a contender for my favorite book of the year (out of 16). It was brutal, but also lovely and compelling. It left me feeling like we can still claw our way out of dystopia if we're willing to stop lying to ourselves. #booksky

Me, a person with a toddler and a job, deciding that I really need to make time to read this 1,000 page dissertation on "Grammatical Categories of the Verb in AAVE" because reasons.

It's never a bad time (and sometimes it's a very, very good time) to plan for emergencies. One of my goals for this year is to have a proper go bag and I'm using this extremely helpful guide from @margaret.bsky.social to do it.

In theory, I would just like a place to talk about fantasy novels, funny toddler things, and how excited I am about grammar—AND YET—I still checked the "politics" box when registering my interests. Wherever I go, here I am. 🤷
