It turns out, writing does something for us that thinking and talking alone can’t accomplish. It actually helps us think differently and learn something about ourselves and the world around us, too.

Take children seriously.

Your primary role is to foster a safe space for family to unfurl. When family members feel safe, they feel loved. When family members feel anxious, they feel rejected. And it’s hard to care about learning when feeling bad about self.

One of the reasons that people struggle with writing is that it doesn’t feel easy.

But what if it could be?

What if your child experienced self-expression as something they enjoy, as something they deserve to have in their toolbox of being human?

The key to a happy #homeschool is progress in learning. Kids and parents need to know that together they are in a context of discovery, that satisfies the child’s need for two things:

1) challenge to grow, and
2) comfort at having mastered or achieved.

If you’re worried about your kids right now and the choices they’re making, what matters more is that they know that they are important to you and that you are proud to be their parent.

Idealism can be the enemy of well-being. Idealism harms us when we become more attached to protecting a system of beliefs or practices than providing for the health and well-being of the individual human beings in our care (including ourselves!).

What would happen if we called our children IN to a conversation as opposed to calling them OUT?

Instead of: “You left your shoes on the floor! Pick them up!” say: “I'd like to hear about your shoes on the floor. What are you planning to do with them?” 👟
