I’m teaching a little group theory to my number theory class to more deftly explore the units in a mod. I want to design a project about groups in the wild, and thought puzzles/games might be good, I.e. the moves you can make on a Rubik’s cube form a group. That spark any ideas for anyone?

If you’re in a bind and really need to approximate the number 31, try cubing π

My god, an entire Reddit thread about the terrible PEMDAS math meme! But an actual real life book that has both ambiguous answers as multiple choice options AND has the correct answer as not the one I’d choose haha

Simple problem we worked on today in Number Theory:

X=3 mod 5
X=5 mod 7
X=7 mod 11

We figured out a solution with some grit but there were some interesting clever ideas that the students had that I enjoyed.

‘Nickname’ is not ‘nick’ + ‘name.’

It was originally ‘ekename.’

‘Eke’ was the Middle English word for “also” or “in addition.”

Since ‘ekename’ began with a vowel, people used ‘an’ before it.

Over time, 'an ekename' became 'a nickname.'

Starting Number Theory elective tomorrow. Either going to start w the Chicken Nugget problem (if nuggets come in packs of 5 and 8, what’s the max amount that you cannot buy?) or having them try to explain the disability rules (why does adding the digits to a multiple of 3 work?). What would you do?

Snow day today — probably snow day tomorrow? Jimmy Carter funeral on Thursday means we can’t be at school. Professional day on Friday. This is a hilarious re entry after break for us in DC!

Going to do a collab with the 4th graders with my senior data science class in January. What should we do??? So excited but need to think of a fun 20-30 minute activity

Update: this is by far the most engagement I have gotten on a BlueSky post, have confirmed that BlueSky is indeed, Philly forward
Is all of BlueSky very Philadelphia Eagles forward or have I accidentally stumbled upon a weird algorithm for myself, it’s not content I want

Today’s vibes while we worked on a packet to prep for our midterms next week - calm jazz music and a projected cozy fire in the front of the classroom. Bonus for my freshmen: if you can’t hear the jazz music, you’re talking too loud

Let’s say one were applying to be an admin, specifically an academic dean… what questions would you prep for in the interview?

The little guy I tutor in Algebra 2 can’t draw infinity symbols, so he turns the whole paper sideways and draws an 8 whenever he needs to write one 🤗

Hello #iteachmath and #mtbos, feels like a crew is reforming over here and I’m HERE FOR IT. I long for the robust online community we used to have. Let’s start sharing and asking and responding to stuff

Doing a schedule design for my school. I want to make a tiny app where people can adjust preferences (start end time of day, class meeting amount of time/frequency, other community time etc) and then have it print off a treemap of their preferences and have them save. I want to do this in R Shiny

Begging people to understand the difference between “Harris could be better on this issue” and “Harris and Trump are the same on this issue.”

The Harris Campaign Has Offered Trans People Almost Nothing
Harris has been virtually silent on trans rights, and her policies would disproportionately benefit well-off trans people.

I can tell it’s the end of the year because I have heard myself saying “sounds like a you problem” a few times in the past week and I know deep down that that’s not a thing I should ever say at school 🙃

Wouldn’t it be cool if upper level math classes in high school were themed electives kind of like English classes?

Number Theory and Cryptography
Sports Analytics
The Geometry of Geography
The Math of Computing

Special triangle shower thought:
A 45-45-90 triangle could have sides of length rt45-rt45-rt90 but a 30-60-90 triangle couldn’t have sides of length rt30-rt60-rt90
🤯

(An unsatisfying rt30-rt90-rt120 instead bah)
