the start to the mavericks season has been so galling that it should inspire deep reflection from within the organization. my latest for @dmagazine.bsky.social goes over what's gone wrong, and what should be the next steps in building around cooper flagg www.dmagazine.com/sports/2025/...
It's Already Time For the Mavericks to Pivot to the Future - D Magazine
Sometimes, eight games can tell you a lot. In the Mavericks' case, it's this: Dallas needs to give up any thought of contending this year and look to the future.

last week mark cuban said the mavs season will go based on how dereck lively and anthony davis shoot threes. instead of focusing on the soundbite, my latest for @dmagazine.bsky.social is about what realistic ways the mavericks big men can help the team's offense www.dmagazine.com/sports/2025/...
The Mavs' Big Men Can't Save Them Through Shooting. Here's What They'll Do Instead.
Mavs minority owner Mark Cuban made headlines by declaring the team's season could come down to how well the likes of Anthony Davis and Dereck Lively hit threes. Don't let that distract from what they...

my latest for @dmagazine.bsky.social is about brandon williams, who was a two-way surprise and turned into a potential building block for a mavericks team desperate for guard play following the luka doncic trade. dallas will need williams again next season www.dmagazine.com/sports/2025/...
Brandon Williams Was a Mavericks Revelation. Now He Must Be Something More.
The Mavericks have plenty of size, but not a lot of juice and playmaking. That makes the 25-year-old very interesting. Can he make another jump for a team that badly needs playmaking?

every public comment from nico harrison since the luka trade has indicated he is trying to win a championship ASAP. yet dallas has had a quiet and modest offseason. my latest for @dmagazine.bsky.social is about how the mavs aren't acting like a team that's all-in www.dmagazine.com/sports/2025/...
The Mavericks Say They're In Win-Now Mode. Their Actions Say Otherwise.
The organization consistently spoke about the present in the aftermath of the Luka Doncic trade. But a quiet offseason suggests there's a bigger picture in mind.

We don't know if the Mavericks are done making moves yet. But if they are, then a team that put itself in win-now mode is repositioning itself into something different.

Here's @boweman55.bsky.social on how the team's words & actions tell us two different things:

d'angelo russell isn't perfect, far from it, but the mavericks don't need a perfect fit from their mid-level exception. my latest @dmagazine.bsky.social explains why russell makes the most sense of the mavericks available free agent options www.dmagazine.com/sports/2025/...
The Mavericks Could Be D'Angelo Russell's Last, Best Chance at an NBA Home
The 29-year-old has never stuck anywhere for three calendar years. There's a reason for that. But there's also reason to believe Dallas could be the best place for him.

Cooper Flagg is going to save the Mavericks from where they were heading. That doesn't mean Dallas' roster is ready to accommodate him just yet. Here's @boweman55.bsky.social with the breakdown of what Flagg will bring and what the Mavs must do to build around him:

Cooper Flagg Will Change the Mavericks. Here's How the Mavericks Should Accomodate Him.
The 18-year-old Duke sensation is a franchise player in every sense of the term. But Dallas will have to make a few changes to maximize his talent.

The Mavericks aren't a playoff team this year. How much optimism should you have for next season? @boweman55.bsky.social dropped a 1,900-word deep dive on what this roster might deliver in 2025-26, with one big caveat: prepare for anything this offseason.

pj washington and dereck lively have shared the floor for 252 possessions for the mavericks, according to cleaning the glass. in those 252 possessions, the mavericks net-rating is +10.3, their defensive rating is 100.4. for reference, OKC currently has the league's best defense at 103.4.

fun fact: according to cleaning the glass, the mavericks are the only team in the NBA with a top-6 offense and top-6 defense.

mavericks last season after march 6 (when they went 16-4 and clicked post trades)

-opponents free throw rate: 17.6%
-opponents offensive rebounding rate: 24.7%

mavericks this season

-opponents free throw rate: 20.9%
-opponents offensive rebounding rate: 29.5%

If you're wondering why the mavericks offense looks off, despite their good overall shooting and scoring number, it's likely because their location effective field goal percentage (which generally measures shot quality), is 29th in the NBA.
