The world. And everything in it.
This little corner of the world has an old cannery -- now converted to a hotel -- tucked under the #Astoria bridge at the mouth of the Columbia River. #Oregon.

Wild #blackberries at front are delicious. Seals and seabirds sun themselves on the docks behind, if you walk down the road a bit.

Some bright #hibiscus #flowers from Kauai for your morning!

First 3 are hybrids. Last is a native tree, sea hibiscus, called hau by the Hawaiians. Its vines were used for cordage and shipbuilding. Its slimy sap was a laxative, and a lubricant including for assisting with childbirth.

A view of downtown #Portland in the fall.

The Willamette river is just visible running through.

Featuring a couple bridges including the Steel Bridge, which earned Portland the moniker #BridgeCity. The glass spires of the convention center are at left. Big Pink is at right.

The Old Mill in #Hobbiton, #NewZealand.

Just across the bridge from The Green Dragon, and down the hill from Bag End. It had a brief cameo in #LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring.

I was drawn in by the fantasy-type #architecture. Apparently it's available for private events.

Deadman's Cove, in the southernmost tip of #Washington.

Named not by pirates, but for numerous shipwrecks at the mouth of the Columbia -- one of the most dangerous regions of the sea. Bodies would wash up here.

It is also a beautiful place for a picnic on the beach.

An idyllic afternoon at Bag End, Hobbiton, #NewZealand.

Hobbiton encompass The Green Dragon, the Party Tree and Field, the gardens, and numerous #hobbit holes.

Two hobbit holes are fully furnished and tour-able. The Green Dragon serves many brews for the brave and true.

A burst of pink-and-yellow plumeria greet the morning sun on #Kauai.

Simply a picture of some aesthetically perfect and highly fragrant frangipani #flowers. Try as I might, I have not been able to grow them outside the tropical zone. A reminder of another life, another place.

A small natural #bonsai waits just for you at the top of the trail, Hamilton #Mountain, Columbia Gorge, #Washington.

The Gorge was carved by floods over the ages, some of the largest on Earth. The last was 1800 years ago, when an ice dam broke, releasing 600 cubic miles of water.

Panorama of the Na Pali coastline, #Kauai.

These cliffs contain bones of ancient #Hawaiian chiefs. After death, one chosen warrior would hide the bones--containing power that could not fall into the hands of an enemy--and then throw himself from the cliffs to keep it secret forever.

Gray Spinner #dolphins, a fun-loving species named for the acrobatic spinning leaps they make from the water.

This pod swam up to our catamaran off the Na Pali coast, including a baby and mother pair.

50% of all spinner dolphins were killed by tuna fishing after 1950.

Autumn afternoon in #Portland, from the viewpoint at Pittock Mansion. The #mountain in focus is Mt. Hood.

It is clear why the Pittocks chose this location. The community later restored the building. The grounds are free, and are a popular place for families, dogs, jogging, cycling.

A memory of summer -- the Peninsula Park #Rose #Garden, in #Portland, Oregon. 2025.

A family enjoys the shade of well-manicured trees, surrounded by fields of redolent roses in all shades and colors.

The garden is tended to by volunteers -- who sometimes leave cut roses for visitors to take.

#Hawaii Kai, showing off the famous Haunama Bay and Koko Head volcanic crater at front.

Some people do not find cities calming, but to me it looks like a miniature world to explore.

Details of #sandcastles from the competition on Long Beach, #Washington.

Self-styled "World's Longest Beach" (claimed by many regions worldwide), Long Beach is stable enough to drive on. People park and camp overnight near the gentle waves. The town is a lovely seaside strip.

Stunning Waimea canyon, Kauai, #Hawaii.

Waimea means ‘red water’, named for the iron-rich volcanic sediment that comprises the entire island.

Called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, though it is much younger at <4 million years.

The #Hawaiian nene, the rarest #goose in the world.

Its name means "chirping" or "whimpering", for its quiet honk.

Once common throughout the islands, their numbers dropped to ~800 by 2004 from invasive species and humans. It is making a comeback thanks to conservation.

A crisp autumn day on Mt. Hood, #Oregon, fall 2024.

The afternoon light and fall foliage highlight the jagged peak of the mountain, which rises above the timberline.

A Hawaiian monk #seal, resting peacefully on the warm sands of #Kauai, Hawaii.

This endangered species exists only in #Hawaii. In the 1800s they were hunted to near extinction. Now they are challenged by climate change, disease, fishing, and injuries from humans.

Tilt-shift of ships plying the waters along #Waikiki beach on Oahu, #Hawaii. The landmark Royal Hawaiian pink hotel is visible too.

The Na Pali coast, #Kauai, #Hawaii.

A breathtaking, pristine coastline without any paved roads. As one of the oldest Hawaiian islands, its steep volcanic #mountains and valleys have eroded over time into such dramatic vistas.

A busy #bee flies on from my beautiful blue plumbago #flowers.

Hardy plumbago don't ask much. They don't need much water or fertilizer. They put on a show in fall with profuse blooms of true-blue flowers that continues for a month or more. Strongly recommend these for the #garden.

I love a good #library, and the Baker Library at #Harvard has one of the most impressive looks of any I've seen.

As the centerpiece for the #Harvard Business School, it houses rare books and works on business history. It sits just off the Charles River in #Boston.
