He laughs, a bubbly-warm sound. “I was having a weird day and then when I saw you, I kind of panicked.” Lan Wangji wrestled a word out of his mouth. “Panicked?” “Yeah, I mean imagine acting like a fucking weirdo in front of the Second Jade of Lan.” Wei Wuxian’s eyes were wide with drama and mirth. “Well, it wasn’t the first time, of course.” Like a fucking weirdo was certainly a way to describe how Lan Wangji had thought of Wei Wuxian, though not necessarily one that was accurate to his own experience. Like a fucking storm that showed him what desire and freedom meant and changed his life life forever, maybe.

Lan Zhan and Wei Ying are rivals in a modern cultivation AU. They’re having a late night talk when they’re forced to spend some time together solving a case 🥰
Lan Zhan shrugs. How can he explain a decision he’d made nearly two decades ago, revisit his past considerations and aspirations, young and arrogant as he’d been back then? “I wanted — more than anything else — to find a partner. To fall in love, to marry, and to have a home to bring them back to, where they’d always be safe and loved. My flat would have been a place to share, to keep, and to call our own.” The admission feels like a hot drop of acid in his belly. “So what happened?” Lan Zhan hesitates. He can sense Wei Ying listening, rapt and curious and nonjudgemental, and it spurs him on. “I just… couldn’t find anyone. I tried. I put myself out there, but it’s never been easy for me to get close to people. Socializing is fine, and I generally do well both in groups or one-on-one, but I’ve always struggled to open up, to make myself truly vulnerable in a way that would be attractive — romantically and emotionally — to someone else.”  He pauses, reaching for the mortifying, damning truth, and finding it. “I met so many people through dating events, but I didn’t fall for a single one. I’m nearly forty-one now, yet I’ve never even held another person’s hand, or kissed anyone, or —” “Or had sex?” Lan Zhan freezes: heart racing in his chest, sweat prickling beneath his underarms. The air-conditioning whines on, yet the air in the room feels abruptly muggy, pushing against his lungs with a warm, syrupy intensity. Between his legs, his cock is rock-hard.  Quietly, quickly, Wei Ying says, “There’s absolutely nothing wrong with —” “Or had sex,” Lan Zhan confirms.
