We’re proud that Borne and the Borne Collaborative were recognised in Parliament as a leading force in the fight to prevent premature birth. But as Baroness Bertin made clear, more must be done through research, early intervention, and national coordination.

Delegates have now split into work groups to develop new research ideas that can be pitched to Borne for possible funding. New ideas generated in real time, that could change the scope of what we know about premature birth. We’ll hear about these ideas during the closing session of day 2.

In the afternoon, Borne Founder Prof Mark Johnson and Borne CEO David Badcock congratulated the PREBIC group on an outstanding meeting, and set out the long term vision for Borne, emphasising the synergy with the aims of PREBIC.

Breaking into workshops, the group looked at identifying research priorities; what could we do to have impact; what do we need to develop a preterm birth prevention framework which will positively impact local population; what is needed to sensitise our communities and make it ‘research ready’.

In addition we heard updates from Borne funded studies INSIGHT-2 (a mechanistic study into pregnancy complications and their impact on maternal and child health, and PROMPT (a novel approach to point-of-care testing for preterm birth.

The afternoon session at PREBIC featured presentations on ‘Research in Progress’ - important ongoing studies including the understanding of clinical phenotypes from a preterm birth debrief clinic, and the MOBILEair feasibility study, an intervention to lower exposure to air pollution in pregnancy.

That’s the challenge posed by PREBIC Chair Prof Sam Messiano.

The answer? Cross-disciplinary collaboration, local data, midwife training & community dialogue.

The goal: real change for babies born too soon, everywhere.
