🌎 Russia’s war has pushed Ukrainians to rethink security not only as the state’s responsibility, but as something citizens do together.

Yet, is Ukrainian civil society fighting for more than territory?

‘For Ukrainian civil society, security requires all three dimensions – military capacity to resist, freedom from authoritarian control and preservation of cultural identity – because each addresses a different facet of colonial domination’
Russia's war in Ukraine has prompted groups of self-organised Ukrainian citizens to work together to defend their country.

These groups offer a powerful example of how democratic resilience can emerge from below during wartime.

What strikes me at International Studies conferences this year is how little is said about Ukraine. In a trend-driven academia, Ukraine has been relegated to an ‘anti-trend’ - too enduring, too inconvenient and displaced by flashier tragedies that check more theoretical boxes.

Not every academic or journalist who's written something about Russia/Ukraine automatically becomes an expert on the region. It matters WHAT exactly they've written. Give voice to those for whom the war isn't just another keyword in their CV.

Do we get it yet?
