All those double dates, sitting with Sunday across the table from Robin and her girl of the week, Boothill running security but joining them in laughter, came back to him in a kaleidoscope of kitschy diners and karaoke nights, smiles and fond conversation. He would never let his guard down like that, never again. “He won’t say what happened,” Boothill said. “He won’t testify in his own defense. And that just makes him look guilty, y’know. These motherfuckers in the DA’s office are planning to put him away for life.” “What do you want from me?” Aventurine’s voice came out in a low rasp. “There’s nothing I can do.”
