Joyce has been busy supporting our neighbors in all kinds of ways—from providing propane and phone service to picking up essentials and supplies for outreach. Alongside her efforts, we’ve got a fun surprise growing in the yard: a giant pumpkin that started as a kindergarten project! We’re inviting everyone to guess its final weight in our pumpkin raffle. Plus, thanks to sales from my personal Pokémon, Lorcana, and Star Wars cards, we’ve been able to build a small emergency buffer to keep outreach going strong.

This week, I’m pulling back the curtain on what it really takes to keep our outreach and transition support programs running. Beyond street outreach, I spend over 20 hours each week fundraising, managing our Patreon, running a TCGPlayer store, organizing events, and covering gaps out of my own pocket. With donations down by 50% over the past two years, every dollar and every helping hand matters more than ever.

Outreach on July 19th was warm and well attended, but it marked a temporary pause in our efforts. As both Joyce and I take needed personal time through August, I’ve been reflecting on the bigger picture — including the heartbreaking news that several of our formerly unhoused neighbors are losing their rent subsidies. Though the system is failing them, our work has not been in vain. This post shares an update on outreach, our ongoing efforts with the Outreach Notebook, and a personal look at what it means to build — and hold — community, even when policies fall short.

From quiet conversations on the street to seismic activity beneath the sea, this week’s update covers a lot of ground—literally. Outreach efforts continue steadily, even as we navigate the summer slowdown and urgent propane requests. Meanwhile, scientists are keeping an eye on Axial Seamount off the Oregon coast, which may be on the verge of erupting. And closer to home, the “Outreach Notebook” software is nearly fully functional, bringing us one step closer to having a secure, volunteer-friendly tool for supporting our neighbors. Outreach was paused this week due to illness and exams, but our focus shifted to something just as vital: preparedness. With recent earthquake swarms near Mt. Rainier (təqʷuʔməʔ), we reflect on the mountain’s power, its cultural meaning, and what disaster planning looks like for our community.

We caught up with a few neighbors over pizza and heard some incredible news from Sheryl, who moved indoors nearly two years ago — she’s starting college! 🎓 While we cheer her on, we’re also watching troubling developments in state and federal budgets that could impact housing and health services for our community. With many unsheltered neighbors living on asphalt, and displacement disrupting community support, our outreach efforts are adapting to meet urgent needs.
