Rare and precious object, spotted in North Ayrshire Museum in Saltcoats. Medal awarded to George Guthrie (of the Ayrshire publishing family) dux in art at the High School in 1910. Donated by the legendary Fra Newbery, Scottish painter and head of Glasgow School of Art. Isn't it beautiful!

The root of my ongoing research. A forgotten grave in a public cemetery, listing the names and dates of death of 30+ young women and girls who died while incarcerated in an Industrial School in the late 19th and early 20th century. Any advice re campaigning to have it preserved? It's fading fast...

Using bottles of grog to hold flat this 19thC map showing the location of every pub, licensed grocer, and places of Christian worship in the city at that time feels a tad disrespectful to its original purpose, but they're way more effective than Blutack. At least they're mostly Scotch Whisky.

The Hielan Jessie, built 1771. The original patron must have been cock-a-hoop when a substantial army barracks was built across from it in 1795, plenty soldiers looking for a convivial beer or 10. The barracks moved to Maryhill in 1872 but the pub survives, even if her petticoats are a bit dingy.

Banana for the energy required to get my head around the 1845 Poor Law (Scotland) Act. Intrigued that 'test wards' in Glasgow Poorhouses housed suspected able-bodied women paupers by making them knit - showing they could support themselves outside, thus disqualifying them from admission.

In a Madrid public park, originally a private estate, sits a quaint 18th century cottage with a lush yet humble veg plot. Turns out it's a folly, an aristocrat's whim, a sanitized imagining of peasant life. It originally housed full-size fake yokels, an old couple and a boy, sitting at a fake table.
Love the black and white stripes on the heel of this sock, but the monochrome parquet effect on the back is even funkier. Trial knit with cheap yarn to test the pattern before I knit them with rather more expensive investment wool.

Historic Glasgow from a bus window: the gateway to Glasgow's old cattle and meat market, Dennistoun. I got it in my head it was a fish market and this chap was Neptune, but not so far away from the river,duh. Any idea who was casting such an intimidating glare upon Victorian punters?

I love this yarn, 100% wool, the colour of grouse on a Scottish hillside in autumn. The original jumper, knitted for my Beloved, was worn through at the elbows, so it was frogged, skeined, soaked, dried, trimmed, wound into new balls and reworked. A lot of work but a lovely result.
