"Columbia" is not as scandalous as it looks. "Colombia" is a Spanish word. English and Spanish have different orthographies. It is not uncommon to Anglicise foreign proper nouns. No one objects to "Brazil" but Portuguese spelling is "Brasil". People are still spelling "Turkey" instead of "Türkiye".

English does not have an orthography. Orthography is 'right writing'. English has only a coinography, its 'common writing'. There has never been agreement on authoritative sources of 'right' writing. The closest would be Chaucer. Don't let your dictionary know. #spelling

Great Vowel Shift in Action: It's 1582. Mulcaster becomes the founder of English lexicography with his Generall Table. Look at the entries for devise. Two accents for two possible pronunciations: divíſe (long i), devìſe (short i), same with bíble/bìble. The former emerging, the latter obsolescent.
