I like books, beer and Beethoven. And wine, whiskey, Bach and numerous other composers. And jazz and rock and roll. And the Portland Trail Blazers!
Anybody else ever notice a similarity between Dmitri Shostakovich and Mike Johnson?

What a shame. Great musician.
RIP to one of the all-time greats... Jack DeJohnette has passed away at age 83. The legendary drummer is pictured here at the September 24, 1965 recording session for Jackie McLean's "Jacknife," which marked his first appearance on a Blue Note record.

Look what happens when my son and I go to Powell's Books in war-ravaged Portland without a chaperone.

"No, I don't mean love, when I say patriotism. I mean fear. The fear of the other. And its expressions are political, not petical: hate, rivalry, aggression. It grows in us year by year. We've followed our road too far." -- Eatraven, in The Left Hand of Darkness, by Ursula K. Le Guin.

Why is my Classical Music Bluesky feed filled with posts that have nothing to do with Classical Music?

I don't think I realized how wonderful Sibelius' 4th symphony is until, while reading @drdavidvernon.bsky.social 's sun forest lake, I listened to it maybe a dozen times. Such a passionate, desolate work filled with, not loneliness, but aloneness.

I've listened to this set twice now. The performances are magnificent. I don't know what to think of #Furtwanger 's Symphony #2. He was influenced by #Bruckner but doesn't seem to have the same depth. His melodies aren't memorable. it's like he didn't have anything to say but felt like talking.

I just got this set. I've been thinking about getting it for a while. #Schubert 9 #Schumann 4, and #Haydn 88, plus Furtwangler's Symphony 2.

Visited my local record shop and picked up this gem -- Schubert's piano trio #2, op. 100, performed by Rudolf Serkin, Adolf Busch, and Hermann Busch, originally recorded in 1935. Absolutely spectacular!

#NowPlaying: Holst's Planets, by Adrian Boult, the Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Choir. I picked up this old recording from 1953 a few months ago. It's a little beat up, but the vinyl is ok and the music is great.
