Witch Hazel is blooming just in time for spooky season!
The American witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) is perhaps Virginia's latest blooming native tree. The threadlike yellow flowers open only after the leaves have started to fall, and can often remain on the tree through the end of November.

Irises in October!
The reblooming irises are putting on a second beautiful show in the Walter Flory Memorial Iris Garden. If you are out to visit the Ginkgo Grove this weekend, make sure you stop by the Iris Garden as well.

Fall migrants are wasting no time moving through Blandy this month! Birders already have reported a dozen species of warblers from the Arboretum in September. Other migrants include flycatchers, vireos, orioles, Bobolinks, Scarlet Tanagers, Blue Grosbeaks, and Indigo Buntings.
