The headcanon is that Starscream is a very light sleeper and wakes up at the slightest noise, while Megatron, accustomed to the noise of the mines and the arena, is hard to wake.

Did Megatron seriously send the beast back to base and leave Starscream to deal with the Autobots? Wouldn't it have been more logical to do the opposite?

It's like he's intentionally leaving him in these situations to see how he'll handle it.
