Different genres require different numbers of characters to work with and against the protagonist. I love designing unique characters, which is why i love writing fantasy and acience fiction.

It is not mandatory to have character profiles. But they are essential tool for writers. It allows you to really create individual characters and work on character building. Otherwise, character can become generic and static.
