Because agribusinesses mainly expand onto land already used by smallholders, securing smallholders’ land rights can both support livelihoods and protect forests and biodiversity.

Using data from nearly 1 million km² across two major deforestation hotspots, we show that forests are lost more slowly where forest-dwelling smallholders are present – even as agriculture expands.

Tropical deforestation is one of the greatest challenges for global sustainability. Diverse actors (smallholders, Indigenous communities, agribusinesses) make decisions that determine whether forests persist or disappear. How interactions & competition among actors influence the forests is unclear.

Quantifying the Spatial Footprint of Agriculture‐Driven Edge Effects in a Global Deforestation Hotspot
Tropical dry forests face increasing pressure from agricultural expansion, but how this expansion impacts on remaining forests is unclear. We quantified and mapped agricultural edge effects on tree c...

Thursday's SystemShift workshop brought together the many perspectives and experiences within our group. We mapped current work and explored future ideas. Next, we will align on priorities for the remaining project period. A valuable step forward for the project.

There are so many perks of working in an international lab - the best one obviously being sweets as souvenirs from all over the world!!

Our findings highlight the need for #birdtracking and monitoring outside breeding ranges, ideally supported by remote sensing based #land-use land cover change monitoring. This could help understand specific environmental change drivers of species decline across the entire migratory range.

We mapped changes in habitat suitability for sociable lapwing through the annual cycle over the past three decades. Our maps indicated an overall increase in suitable habitat through the annual cycle i.e. – breeding, stop-over and winter ranges.

Our findings suggest to assess carefully where to reintroduce bison in the context of resources availability and potential with conflicts (i.e., croplands are highly available), rather than in specific habitat types.

Using the largest European bison dataset to date, we show that bison are generalists that adapt habitat use to availability. In modern landscapes, they also use croplands as resources, despite increased human presence.

How much do we know about the ecology of a species that went nearly extinct?
For many extirpated species what we observe today reflects only a fragment of their historical range, thus our ecological expectations are drawn from a truncated version of the reality
