There are two venerated, much feared trees on the edge of Barwell Common. Known as Whip Scar and Tangle Knife, they are home to particularly quarrelsome Wood Sprites. To pass between them has a fearsome terror tithe and even if it's paid, you are still likely to hear them spitting curses.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems that two years of weaponised genocidal mass murder in Gaza has probably made global political violence and terror *MORE* likely, not *LESS* likely

And that opposing mass death makes you anti-terrorism, not pro-terrorism

Absolutely horrifying to see those scenes from such a cowardly attack in Bondi.

This week we got an email saying the John Medley Building at the Uni of Melbourne is being torn down - we have to vacate mid next year (to an as yet unknown location). To make space for green grass. A blow for our architectural history, sustainability, staff wellbeing, and an attack on modernism

It’s time for my annual thread of Australian poetry books you should buy ppl for Xmas. No one buys poetry partly cos it’s intimidating. It rarely makes xmas book guides. But poetry is an ethical gift that: supports underfunded writers; wins brownie points with gift receiver; improves the human soul

Reading the responses to this is unbelievably interesting, I can’t wait to share them in an eventual book

Victoria can’t make up its mind about supporting or condemning children, but this is at least welcome news

Victoria could become first Australian state to ban unnecessary surgery on intersex children
Exclusive: Legislation would prohibit deferrable, irreversible procedures until child can give informed consent, bringing state in line with ACT

This is so good. TLDR: young people don't like it, and have great reasons why the ban is a bad idea

ARC are considering a restructure in which jobs there will be lost, a source tells me.

This seems ridiculous when they're about to completely overhaul the entire grants system – they've never undertaken anything so large before!

I've long said ARC needs MANY MORE staff, & should do more, not less.

If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

And this is exactly why poetry is relatively safe from AI. It’s not worth anything to capital! Thank you Maggie Nelson!! 🙇🏻‍♀️

I counter the claim that "AI steals just the way human artists steal." We do not. Artists engage relationally with sources rather than severing them for computational processing. Computers are not people. Comparing generative tools to artists is a dehumanizing act.
