Tracking cars, tech, political zaniness
And for the final number: "Before He Cheats."

Some jokes just suggest themselves. If I was doing the inaugural, Underwood would not be invited because you know the line gets used.

Julie: The other big world trend (beyond moving away from liberal to conservative) is away from grown-ups in charge.

Big Awl (did I pronounce it right?) is investing in clean energy because they know long-term, petroleum-based energy is problematic. The US is in the hot seat. We use more energy per person than any other country. @juliemason.bsky.social

Sununu to @juliemason.bsky.social “Somebody ought to give you a lesson in economics.” Factcheck to Chris: anybody can collect Social Security at 62 but get a lower payout the rest of their life. Or wait ‘til as late as 70. It all evens out around age 78. Start SS at 70, it can be $4K+ per month.

Waiting for betting sites to lay odds on the Hawk Tuah Girl getting a cabinet position. (She was just on Colbert.) If Don Jr. doesn’t move in first. He’s already moved down 20 years in GF-age. What’s another 20?

Thursday POTUS Politics show: so listenable (Sumo shouting pols). So quotable, led by all-name team NC US Rep Wylie Nickel on whether Dems or Republicans are better at redistricting: “Republicans bring a gun to a knife fight.” @juliemason.bsky.social

Are the same people working two jobs for 47? This NYT article by professional pot-stirrer @maggiehaberman.bsky.social describes Trump aide Natalie Harp. But last week wasn’t this Pam Bondi? Could they both really be Ivanka?

@milbank.bsky.social What’s a NJB doing on a Kubota tractor? If this is not >10hp nor diesel, is this His way of saying you have book royalties? PS lost a friend whose gentleman farmer tractor flipped. Before rollbars and seat belts went standard. Safer now not 100% safe @juliemason.bsky.social

McKay Coppins sounded like same old (Europeans don’t like Trump & cabinet picks; zzzz.) Then this: Trump picks are worse for Yanks than for Europeans. That’s insightful^2 @juliemason.bsky.social

@juliemason.bsky.social Re concerns about trans dudes sneaking in a Congressional Ladies loo and perhaps proof requiring one drop trou. Recalls the 1990s flap that gays ought be tattooed for easy identification. Then media friends talked up best, most beneficial locations for the tats.

@juliemason.bsky.social About LA auto show: not only do automatics get better gas mileage, they also accelerate faster. So, no reason for stick shifts except for the bros to show off.

@juliemason.bsky.social L’Affaire Gaetz calls for reasoned, somber but not dull discussion, omitting whiny told-you-so Dem analysts and GOP party line hand puppets. Press the big red button on your board, the one marked Get Milbank On-Air a Day Early. We need a strong dose of understated droll.

Raising the over/under line from 2 to 3 on # of Trump early appointment fails: AG Gaetz, SecDef Hegseth, now add DNI Gabbard. Military, vets vote 2 to 1 GOP, why insult them and splinter Trump‘s coalition? Plus some people cast dim view at congressmen sleeping with 17-year-olds.

Nice piece with WaPost fact checker Glenn Kessler. About civilians fact checking the debate in real time, it is just not possible. When the pros help, it levels the playing field the same way as evenly balanced questions and time limits. @juliemason.bsky.social

@juliemason.bsky.social thank you, McKay Coppins, for giving us the book on Mormons in the 2022 election. Nice insights on the two parties courting LDS voters. Really, GOP mugs and beer koozies merch for Mormon voters?

@juliemason.bsky.social you’re spot-on about the value of newspaper profiles of lower level candidates vs. endorsements for president or governor. I did my share in WMass back in the early Dukakis years. Didn’t love it but it helped people choose better (less bad?) candidates.

Time to set aside pets-as-edibles posts to re-re-examine Hunter’s laptop, Hillary’s server then Benghazi...and if those are cleared up, discuss what really matters: "Do we hate the Yankees or Dodgers more?" While much of America wonders, "Why couldn’t Cleveland be playing?" @juliemason.bsky.social

#VPDebate is worth watching for unintentional comedy or a soundbite gone awry and raises somebody’s hackles. I’m watching knowing it won’t move the needle one-tenth of a percentage point. Too much to hope for a “Senator, you’re no John Kennedy” put-down. Still, we hope. @juliemason.bsky.social

Michigan ex-Rep Mike Rogers notes EVs are built with 40% less labor. What’s bad for factory workers can be good for buyers. In the 2030s EVs become the future. Rogers is right that they make a good second car now. Plug-in hybrids are fabulous middle ground. @juliemason.bsky.social
