Wharf Gold mine in Lead, SD, is the only large-scale mine in the Black Hills, and — by itself — it is the largest toxic emitter in South Dakota according to data released by the EPA's annual Toxic Release Inventory (TRI).

The Ponderosa gold exploration drilling project in the northern Black Hills is not "On Hold" anymore. Instead, the project application process is active, according to the BHNF.
