September 11, 1978 Janet Parker became the last known person to die of smallpox. The World Health Organization (WHO) began an intensified eradication program in 1967. It was through hard work and the development an effective vaccine people don't suffer from this virus today.

August 9, 1999, veterinarian Dr. McNamara a pathologist at the Queens Zoo, began investigating a large die-off of Crows. Dr. McNamara identified a potential viral encephalitis in the brain tissue of the crows which through her efforts was correctly identified as West Nile Virus.

July 1885, 9yr old Joseph Meister was bitten by a rabid dog. Louis Pasteur had developed a successful Rabies vaccine for dogs and rabbits. Joseph became the first humane to receive the vaccine. The vaccine was successful and Joseph survived. Pre- and Post- Rabies vaccines today save lives.

May 25, 1939, Howard Florey gathered a team and conducted the first successful experiment demonstrating the power of penicillin. Through the teams work modern medicine was born, and paved the way for drug discovery. It has been estimated that over 500 million lives have now been saved by penicillin

On May 11, 2011 the World Organization for Animal Health declared the global eradication of Rinderpest. In 1960 the veterinary scientist Walter Plowright developed an inactivated vaccine that induced lifelong immunity without major side effects or the risk of further transmission.

April 13, 1955, the first Polio vaccines arrives at Mayo Clinic. Before the vaccine, Polio was a major cause of disability in children. The vaccine brought the number of cases from 16,000 infections a year in the United States to zero in 2023. Polio cases remain in Afghanistan and Pakistan today.

Dr. Jane Hinton, graduated in 1948 and became one of the first two African American women to earn a degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Through her career she developed a medium known as Mueller-Hinton agar which is used to this day to grow bacteria to test for resistance to antibiotics.

In 1793, an outbreak of yellow fever killed 10% of Philadelphia's population. Yellow fever is transmitted by mosquitos and originated in Africa. It was likely brought to the United States via the slave trade. Prevention of yellow fever relies on vaccination, as there is no effective antiviral.

Chronic Wasting Disease is a deadly prion disease in animals such as deer, elk, moose and reindeer. A prion (misfolded protein) causes naturally occurring proteins in the animals brain to misfold, causing symptoms and eventual death. Tranmission between animals and be direct or indirect contact.

Esther Lederberg played a pivotal role in understanding gene regulation and the process of making RNA from DNA. Dr. Lederberg also discovered the lambda phage, a virus that infects E. coli bacteria. Dr. Lederberg never received credit for her work, as her husband was awarded the Nobel Prize instead

In 1923, veterinarian Dr. Ramon discovered the diphtheria toxoid, a molecule capable of neutralizing the toxin produced by diphtheria bacteria. In the 19th century, diphtheria affected 30,000 people each year and killed half of all children infected. Due to the vaccine infections are rare today.

In 1882, Tuberculosis TB killed 1 in 7 people in the United States and Europe. In 1930, Dr. Seibert developed the first test for TB by inoculating a small amount of tuberculin under the skin. Today, health care providers use TB blood tests and TB skin tests to detect inactive and active infections.

1978 in North America, Europe, and Australia an endemic disease of dogs appeared. Canine parvovirus type 2 was discovered and was believed to be a mutant of the feline panleukopenia virus. A vaccine was developed in 1980 which protects dogs from infection and disease.

In 1923, the first Canine Distemper vaccine was developed in Britain. Since its development the vaccine has helped reduce the frequency of the deadly virus. Distemper has a mortality rate of approximately ~69% in young dogs. Today, the disease is infrequently seen due to widespread vaccination.

A measles outbreak is rapidly spreading through unvaccinated communities in Texas and New Mexico. There are 49 confirmed cases, though officials suspect the actual case number to be higher. This is all occur at the same time RFK is suggesting halting research & vaccinations of infectious diseases.
