Apple hasn't confirmed why it acquired the company. But Kuzu develops “lightweight embedded database technology" that Apple could possibly use in its FileMaker Pro, Freeform, or iWork apps--for social features in other apps like Apple Music or Apple Games.

Six Alberta projects are getting money from the province's Technology, Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) fund, which comes from industrial carbon pricing revenue.
