Some thoughts on recent events.
Please kick me off this podium I climbed up on if I got it wrong, but I feel like the reason why we don’t see equal amounts of action from men* and women* in situations like these recent callouts of harmful and predatory acts of sexual harassment and abuse is because people who were socialized as men, in general and as a group, lack the situational empathy and understanding. They did not have to grow up watching their every move and word on how it could be turned against them, they did not need to compare notes on the other gender* on who to trust and who to avoid, and did not have to hold space for someone else to feel their feelings and reassure them that those feelings are perfectly valid. It’s not strictly their fault and it is also not an excuse. It’s an explanation on the disparity of reactions from people. It is, however, at this point the n-th and certainly not the last occasion that something like this comes to light. It is, by now, a pattern that’s evident to the victims in hindsight, and proof for anyone willing to see that these people are right here among us. We can’t assume that every one of these people does it intentionally, or we might as well write off a whole group of people as bad actors, but it does mean that innocent until proven guilty is a gift, and not a right. However it also means that when the (overwhelming majority being women*/femmes) victims brave the scrutiny of the public, the public ought to listen and the men* need to not only recognize the need for their support and public renouncing of the abusers, but also to take part in socializing with other men* without the women* present. For those who feel the itch to say something, but don’t know what or how - just speak your mind. Even if you think you’re not likely to change someone’s mind about doing the wrong thing, you will still show that you care about the victims enough to distance yourself publicly from the bad behavior. You can’t know what you don’t know. But in this time and age, you really should want to know more and do more. Do better, be better. Not for me, or them. But because that’s the right thing to do. *words used colloquially for description of group
