🚨 Historian from Vytautas Magnus Univ. claims to have found a 451 AD mention of #Lithuania 🇱🇹 in a Vatican manuscript, tied to Attila the Hun’s spies.

If confirmed, this would predate the known 1009 reference by ~600 years.

On September 17, 1939, the Soviet Union attacked Poland🇵🇱from the east, just over two weeks after Nazi Germany’s assault from the west, following the secret terms of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact.The invasion began a harsh occupation marked by mass deportations and political killings.

86y ago, Nazi Germany invaded Poland and started WWII, soon followed by the Soviet Union. This premeditated joint invasion was the direct outcome of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact that paved the way for the war, the occupation of the Baltic States & the division of Central and Eastern Europe.

The Constituent Assembly of Lithuania— the first parliament of independent state of🇱🇹to be elected in direct, democratic, general, & secret election—assumed its duties 105 years ago. Gabrielė Petkevičiūtė-Bitė chaired the 1st sitting. At the time,women had no voting rights in many European countries.

53 years ago, 19 years old student Romas Kalanta gave his life for the cause of freedom. In a powerful act of protest, he set himself on fire in Kaunas, crying out “Freedom for Lithuania!” His sacrifice ignited demonstrations & became a powerful symbol of Lithuania’s🇱🇹 resistance to the Soviet regime

During his pastoral visit to Lithuania in 2018, Pope Francis visited former KGB prison cells where many Lithuanian Catholic priests had been imprisoned and tortured by the occupying Soviet regime. Holy Father was deeply moved by the visit. Lithuanian clergy played a pivotal role in resisting soviets

April 13th marks Katyn Massacre Remembrance Day. 85y ago, soviet regime committed one of the most horrific crimes of the 20th century, murdering 22,000 members of 🇵🇱 military elite. Today, russian nazis continue same brutality, committing atrocities in Bucha & other parts of 🇺🇦
