Electro returns with The Eel in tow for Untold Tales of Spider-Man No. 11, but the action is definitely more in the shifting soap opera of Peter Parker’s social life and certainly with the debut of Sally Avril as Bluebird.

At this point it feels like we’re in a constant cycle of Superman and Lex Luthor being friends and allies more often than not, but, when it’s done well, it’s always fun. Likewise, I’ve been enjoying Doug Mahnke’s art since I was a kid, but he just keeps leveling up.

Paul Jenkins smartly spent the front half of his Inhumans series digging into the exotic nature of their society so that when it butts up against humanity in issue No. 5 there’s a real sense of contrast.

Brad Meltzer writes with such charm and enthusiasm that you get caught in the fun of ideas like Wildfire having the same body as Red Tornado. The art on Justice League of America is next level—Ed Benes does not get enough credit for this run in terms of how motivated he was.

Danny Lore did a nice job pulling together a concept I know has been kicking around for a while and overall understanding the assignment for Bloodline. The teen drama vibe rings true to the genre and I thought the art from Karen S. Darboe and Cris Peter stood out.

I’m always taken aback by how the Triangle Era Superman crew took a one off Fantastic Four gag in Hank Henshaw and made him one of the Man of Steel’s most enduring foes. Tom Grummett is an all-time favorite and Genesis era may not be the peak of his powers, but it’s crisp, clean art.

After a few throwaway fresh Spider-Man villains in the early issues of Untold Tales, Kurt Busiek and Pat Olliffe hit pay dirt with quirky Commanda in No. 10, a unique and visually compelling original creation.

I continue to be pleasantly astounded at what a fanboy for almost every era of comics Steve Orlando proves a fan of. The Ray also figures heavily into this issue and he’s a great character to showcase the art and colors of Stephen Byrne who really shines here.

As he places the Inhumans into a larger social and cultural tapestry, Paul Jenkins also plays a bit fast and loose with their status as part of the Marvel Universe. Maximus really starts to emerge as a unique, quirky threat beyond the stock villain he plays in other past stories.

One of the things I liked about when Geoff Johns wrote the Legion of Super-Heroes were his attempts to integrate them not just with Superman, but the larger DC Universe, which was on full display during The Lightning Saga.

Tini Howard writes Betsy Braddock with such poise and her Captain Britain mini really celebrates all the nice footnotes from literal years of Excalibur. I’m sad this wraps her run with these characters for the time being, but it did last a nice length and I hope she’ll be back someday.

The technical aspects of John Byrne’s prose in Genesis is proficient, but most of the storytelling comes off clunky and uninspired. The best pieces of the comic definitely come from Ron Wagner’s efforts with Joe Rubinstein, Patricia Mulvihill and Clem Robins as the art has charm.

If I’m being candid, the Lizard in Untold Tales of Spider-Man No. 9 is a bit more loquacious than I like and Batwing doesn’t do it for me, but Kurt Busiek counters that with solid soap opera and ongoing love for the Silver Age.
