Silver Surfer: Ghost Light was a neat exercise in comic book storytelling by plucking a small but classic moment from history and expanding it out to thoughtful little epic. Huge credit to whoever in editorial came up with this as well as John Jennings for a beautiful tale.

I honestly have never heard much about John Byrne’s Wonder Woman to recommend it, but issue No. 126, while in no way standalone, is dense in a good way and ambitious enough to make me curious. The art is also leagues ahead of other late era efforts I’ve seen from Byrne.

Untold Tales of Spider-Man No. 19 takes a bit of a lighthearted turn with Kurt Busiek and GL Lawrence leaning heavy into the Silver Age sensibility of the supporting cast, but besides being fun the issue does not lack emotional impact.

While Red Hood and the Outlaws is ultimately Jason Todd’s vehicle, there’s no question the games of inevitable tragedy Scott Lobdell is playing with Bizarro is the most compelling aspect of the book. Creeper’s guest spot is weird.

I’ve found on the whole that Mark Gruenwald’s big ideas and imagination age superbly, but his dialogue can come off stilted, and 1990s Rick Jones doesn’t help. Still, there’s no beating his story instincts, so this was a read that went down easy enough.

Phil Noto is one of the finest artists working in comics, but while his line work and storytelling on Daredevil & Echo meet the usual high standards, that he does incredible colors as well really completes the package. Taboo and B. Earl craft a balanced and elaborate tale.

As much as I enjoy Dan Jurgens’ Teen Titans, he has such a handle on the originals I wish he had gotten a run with them. You’re not going to experience art much prettier than Jurgens finished by George Perez with the excellent Gregory Wright and Digital Chameleon on colors.

I thought Untold Tales of Spider-Man No. 19 was going to be a straight action issue, but Kurt Busiek again seamlessly weaves in ongoing soap opera and ratchets the ongoing stakes. Pat Olliffe has been teamed with a number of inkers on this series, but I think I like Al Williamson best.

There’s no question Paul Jenkins’ Inhumans series treats each lead character with consideration beyond anything prior. Jae Lee’s art has been tremendous this entire run, but the final issue really leans into his use of heavy inks.
