A letter from the Clerk of my Quaker meeting to the Meeting's MP, about the police raid at our Meeting House in Covent Garden last Thursday. It's a space I've used and treasured, since my first visit 20 years ago next month. Reading about the raid felt like learning that my home had been violated.

Strongly agree with this and linked thread. Of course people want the offender to be present for the sentence and it is often deeply painful for families and victims when they refuse to attend. But there are limits to what can practically be done.
I hate to point out the obvious, but we could not have a clearer demonstration of why a “must attend” law is unworkable.

“Axel Rudakubana is disrupting his sentencing, shouting that he feels ill, has chest pains and needs a paramedic.
With the utmost sympathy to the relatives of anyone brutally murdered, there is absolutely no way sentencing is going yo take place in E&W courts with a disruptive and violent defendant in the dock. No chance whatsoever.

Sharing my response to the MoJ's Independent Sentencing Review. It examines how we might think differently about the progression of long-sentenced prisoners while maintaining public confidence.

I saw this in the kitchen at the new office yesterday, and somehow felt just a little bit more at home.

Publication question: how long would you wait after submitting an article, before starting to pursue the editors for an answer? This one was submitted in May, and is still showing as under review. First chaser email, sent about a month ago, got no response at all. Also: any tips on how to chase?

Remembering the Fishmongers Hall tragedy, on this day in 2019. Some thoughts on loss, and violence's long shadow, and on how I want to remember Jack five years on.

Never forgotten.
