The National Science Foundation (NSF) is facing consolidation due to a proposed 55% budget cut for the 2026 fiscal year. Merging specialized areas will compromise expertise, peer-review quality, and transparency. The purpose of a smaller NSF is to make it more vulnerable to political influence.

I will say Soup had to be completely sedated last month and that was super super scary for me as a helicopter dog mom but he’s doing well ❤️

For decades, NSF broader impacts have been explicit that a target goal is increasing participation in STEM fields. I don't think I have ever read a proposal that does not include any of these flagged terms. Nearly every grant will fail in the decision tree later in the thread.🧪⚛️
🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.

This year was a lot of things. Good, bad, heartbreaking, and healing. I finally fulfilled my dream of going to Vietnam. I promised myself in grad school, if I ever made it out, I’d go to Vietnam to eat pho because of the amount of comfort it brought me and kept me afloat.

Very sad to hear of Fraser Stoddart's passing.
Fraser was undoubtedly a fantastic scientist, but what I remember most is how generous he was. He gave me an amazing opportunity to do a postdoc in his lab, and I learned so much during my time at Northwestern.
What a legacy he leaves. R.I.P. Fraser 🏴
