Five (!) years ago this month, a large flock of Evening Grosbeaks descended on our feeders, ate everything they could, and took off, never to be seen again. The one and only time I've ever seen them. It was magical.

First time I saw them in our yard was mid-winter a decade ago. I didn't know what they were, but they brightened my day & made me think of woodland fairies. I’ve since seen & recorded them much closer, but this scene brings back magical memories 🥰

The front bird in the middle has its long wings lifted as if it wants to take off, while the bird behind and to the right of it has its wings spread to the sides, its mouth open in a squawk, and the feathers on its head in crazy disarray as it tries to scare off the front bird. The entire scene is reflected off the water. The center bird of the left side group is about twice as large as the others. It is the lone Great Egret and has an orange beak versus the black of the Snowies.
