Incredibly short-sighted decision-making. Dare I say, they should have consulted some *social scientists* on the ramifications of such a decision, and the economic risks (which they value so much) of reduced capabilities in the humanities.
Science minister Judith Collins just announced she's changing the Marsden Fund rules so that 50% of funds go towards supporting proposals with "economic benefits to New Zealand". This is the only fund for fundamental 'blue-sky' research www.beehive.govt.nz/release/mars...

wtf wtf goddamn even economics is a social science, where do you think 'the economy' comes from
It’s a dark day for research in Aotearoa New Zealand and the ramifications for the country are huge. Minister Judith Collins has just announced our blue-skies funder will no longer fund humanities & social science research and that 50% of what is funded must have economic benefit.

This government is not interested in real impact; they are interested in short-term economic gains at the expense of long-term societal benefit. Cutting funding for humanities and social sciences risks stifling the interdisciplinary innovation and critical thinking needed to drive true impact.
This statement in particular is horrifying and clearly not true: “Real impact on our economy will come from areas such as physics, chemistry, maths, engineering and biomedical sciences.”
