Last year's Budget's overhaul of business rates means that the average community pub will pay an additional 63% on their business rates bill, leaving hundreds of locals on the brink and thousands of jobs in the balance.

“To preserve the future of our brewers and pubs, Government must work with us to deliver meaningful business rates reform, a cut in beer duty, and mitigating soaring employment costs.”

We spoke to @telegraph.co.uk about looming alcohol duty rise come February 1

"It's really important that the government does deliver some further support for those pubs."

Last week, our Strategy and Policy Director @andytighe spoke with LBC following reports of a government rethink on the Budget's business rates measures.

Still catching up on what a potential government rethink on business rates might mean for pubs?

City AM's Matt Kenyon provides a thorough breakdown of last week's reported review of business rates, with insights from our Strategy and Policy Director Andy Tighe.

Our response to the reports that Government will make an announcement on business rates for pubs.

"We think that's going to do a huge amount to encourage brewers to get into the No and Low category even more"

Yesterday, our Policy Manager Steve Livens spoke with ITV London to discuss how the government can unlock investment and innovation within the No and Low alcohol market.
January 6, 2026 at 12:24 PM
With Dry January in the news, our CEO Emma McClarkin sat down with BBC Breakfast to talk about the rise of the no and low beer market.

To further drive innovation and investment, we’re calling on the government to update the definition of “alcohol-free” from 0.05% to 0.5%.

We're on track to lose a pub a day.

Pubs are not just businesses - they are meeting places, employers, and the heart of towns and villages.

Urgent action is needed which is why we want to work with Government to bring in a pub-specific business rates relief which could save pubs and jobs.
December 29, 2025 at 12:46 PM
Despite the government's manifesto promise to level the playing field on business rates, the average community pub will be paying an additional 63% on their business rates bill while online giants who use distribution warehouses are walking away with a 7% increase.

"That's the equivalent of a 12% rise in beer duty"

Thank you to Peter Fortune MP for raising issue of EPR costs in the chamber earlier today.

We're calling on Government to ensure that these measures are fairly implemented and do not punish an already squeezed sector.
December 18, 2025 at 2:44 PM
Earlier this week, Emma spoke with the FT to help break down why so many publicans felt blindsided by the Budget.

It's imperative that the government works fast to implement a 30% pub-specific relief on business rates to mitigate last month's shocking rise in rateable values.
December 17, 2025 at 2:43 PM
Today we spoke to The Sun about how 2,000 pubs have been forced to close their doors over the past five years, with many more now at-risk under the new business rates regime.

"The reality is that we're seeing bills going up and up."

We spoke to @goodmorningbritain.bsky.social last week to explain how the Budget has badly hit pubs across the UK.

We want to collaborate with Government and bring in a pub specific relief that would ease the burden they suddenly face.

“We are calling on the Government to take urgent action by introducing a pub-specific relief.”

With the average landlord making just 12p profit on a pint, it’s time for the Government to honour its manifesto commitment to rebalance the business rates burden.
December 12, 2025 at 12:44 PM
“Rateable values have risen by up to 500% in some cases. It is crazy.”

We continue to urge the Chancellor to honour her commitment to creating a fairer system. Pubs need meaningful reform, not marginal tweaks, to level the playing field and secure the future of this vital sector.
December 11, 2025 at 2:59 PM
At yesterday's emergency summit, Emma spoke with GB News' Olivia Utley to break down the mounting tax burden that pubs are facing, as well as the disproportionately high business rates bill that will leave many locals up-and-down the country on their knees.

We need a pub specific relief 🍻
December 11, 2025 at 10:46 AM
Today we welcomed pub chiefs from all across the country to our emergency summit in the wake of the Chancellor's blindsiding Budget.

It's time for the Government to recognise the disproportionate tax bill facing pubs and urgently rethink last month's business rates decision.
December 10, 2025 at 3:43 PM
Before we head to our Emergency Summit, we headed to @skynewsrss.bsky.social with @sophyridge.bsky.social and Wilfred Frost on how the Budget has left the sector £160m poorer every year, thanks to a lack of meaningful business rates reform.

Government must revisit the impact on pubs.
December 10, 2025 at 8:01 AM
Ahead of our Emergency Summit with sector chiefs to discuss the Budget, we spoke to @goodmorningbritain.bsky.social about how pubs are being hit with sky high business rates and what this means for closures, jobs, and communities.

Thanks to Greene King for hosting us (especially the GM Nico!)
