The rules have always allowed for a player who is catching the ball while running to go into the backcourt if their momentum is what caused them to go into the backcourt. Similar to allowing 2 steps when catching on run. No one can simply stop on a dime.

A lot of people see this SGA play and immediately think foul baiting. Totally fair.
I’m not saying it isn’t, but the measurements suggest something else might be happening. Shot sway is a real mechanic, and this one is kinda in his normal range.

Lost in the absolute insanity of Lakers Suns last night was this wholly suboptimal play by Marcus Smart. Up by 2, 4 sec shot clock differential, you MUST wind the clock down, not take the bait. It's the Smart Experience. None of the other stuff happens if he plays this properly.

Here’s the best angle on Grayson Allen’s gather & step-thru — left foot hits basically as he gathers, so in real time that’s gonna look fine. But he does shift the right foot about 2 inches, which makes it a travel by rule. Super hard to catch live, though. #NBA #Travel. 👌🏀
