Diarists and Richmond newspapers did not. Upon the arrival of “two car-loads” of these unfortunates, the Richmond Dispatch noted that “[t]heir masters propose to offer them for sale in Richmond, not deeming them desirable servants after having associated with the Yankees.” 4/4 #antietam #history

While the US victory at Antietam brought forth the Emancipation Proclamation, the campaign erased freedom for as many as 2,000 Black Americans who had liberated themselves when US soldiers occupied Harpers Ferry. As they did on the Gettysburg campaign, the Confederate army acted as slavecatchers 1/
