They were session musicians on Labi Siffre's track 'I Got The...' which is the foundational sample upon which Eminem based his track.

Watching the occasional nu metal video come up on the WantMyMTV website reminds me that vocalists really did hold the mic like that and I feel so bad for the venue sound guys during that period in musical history.
