When it comes to social mobility and inclusion, we hear the word 'merit' a lot. Far too often markers of class are mistaken for markers of 'merit'. The way someone talks, dresses, shared cultural tastes are mentioned.

Yet these aren't markers of merit, they're markers of class.

Just listened to an interview on LBC where a caller falsely claimed ‘we don’t have free speech in the U.K.’. Asked by the presenter what she couldn’t say anymore that she would like to, the caller couldn’t provide an example.

Reform U.K’s policies will only harm working class communities. A party that wants to charge people to see a doctor, led by a millionaire ex-banker, pushing the interests of big corporations and fossil fuel giants, is no friend of working class people.

Populism, at its heart, is the denial of complexity. It proposes simplistic solutions to complex problems, based on an 'us vs them' culture, but does little by way of offering tangible solutions.
