Retired bean counter, guitarist, motorcyclist and weight trainer.
Watched Adolescence and it was a great drama. The tension had my blood pressure up. But I can't have been the only person thinking "he's going to need T-Cut to get that paint off" to the point where my wife said "stop shouting at the TV, they can't hear you".

Been a regular Path of Exile player. Starting to think that with Phrecia and POE 2, GGG have ruined a good game whilst focusing on creating a mediocre game. Giving up for now.

Do you think that if JD Vance ever came to the UK he would get distracted by the eternal DFS sale?

There is no coherence sitting behind this behaviour. It is just malevolence.

Does anyone in the US understand (or even care about) the demand side effects of these public sector reductions? the amount of spending power taken out of the economy will be huge. The 80's rhetoric of the state crowding out the private sector was bollocks - contraction is inevitable.

What is this American obsession with the price of eggs?

Can anybody explain Trump's obsession with Greenland? In a world that is increasingly irrational, this just seems odd beyond reasoning. And, yes, I know reasoning doesn't come into it.

A proper 1970s christmas - power cut for 7 hours, eating dinner by candlelight.

I first read Dune when I was 14. Read it about 10 times since. Genius, but i could never quite see the Butlerian Jihad concept. Looking at the world right at this minute, it makes more sense.

Trump and Musk remind me of the fable of the scorpion and the frog. In my mind, Trump is the scorpion - it's not if, it's when.

What bothers me most about the hagiographies tech journalists wrote about Elon Musk for 20+ years is that they universally framed him as an intelligent man.

He's not.

He's an undereducated, intemperate, incurious, prejudiced, unwise, narrowly skilled dolt who is willfully ignorant on most topics.

When I was a kid, I loved (and still do) science fiction. Flying cars, people wearing silver clothes and living in huge, clean buildings. It all seemed so utopian. I can't tell you how disappointed I am with the actual future, where everyone just stares at oblongs.

If you want an idea of what libertarian Mars will turn out like, just play the game BioShock.

Really trying to get into Dune Prophecy, but I've always though the Anderson/Herbert books are simplistic claptrap compared the complex tapestry of the original. Anybody reading Dune would know there was never a literal war against thinking machines.

This is one of the most well-written explanations of certain kinds of AI errors I’ve seen to date. (The whole article is great too.)

Week 2 in Lanzarote, and the weather has been very warm. Talking to a couple who've lived here 20 years and never seen it as warm as this in November. It's almost as if the climate is changing.

Sat down this morning and played the intro to Merry Christmas by Slade on my guitar. My wife's response was to ask me to do something which I am not sure is physically or medically feasible. Oh well.

Saddened to hear about John Prescott. The way he faced down southern MPs trying to rip the piss out of his accent was terrific. As a Northumbrian who worked in London for 6 years, I know exactly how infuriating this is. His punch to the face of the egg hurler was FAFO before it was even invented.

The amount of people that don't understand the difference between Schengen and Freedom of Movement is staggering. Context - "Brexit hasn't impacted passport controls as the UK was never a Schengen member." Seen this so many times I want to scream.

Been learning the guitar solo from Paranoid by Black Sabbath. You can see the birth of Heavy Metal in everything Tony Iommi did at that stage. Also makes sense why a lot of songs were in E (or detuned equivalent). He is very familiar with that pattern up and down the neck.

Really liking Bluesky. Blocked a lot of dubious accounts the past 2 days. I have no problem discussing politics with people who have differing opinions to me. I have Labour friends and I have Tory friends. The people I am blocking are not debating - they are like shit hurling howler monkeys.

I deleted all of my tweets and closed down my twitter account the day Musk walked in with his sink. He had always seemed like a wrong'un to me. I probably underestimated the extent of his nefariousness.

Watching the local news (North East England) this morning and there was a piece on Ryan Reynolds doing a video call with a kid who is very ill. For some reason it really touched me - @vancityreynolds.bsky.social you and your wife are really decent human beings.
