Stephen Colbert's Late Show can do something great. In 1997, I dedicated the block "Big Apple Corner," for the track writer. Why not take the show to the New Orleans Fair Grounds to honor the black stable hands who coined "Big Apple" in 1920? @brianstack153.bsky.social

Manhattan cocktail got its name from the 2-1-2 area code? Even though the cocktail is from at least the 1880s--way before the telephone area code! This guy (johnnymurtaugh) is a licensed tour guide? cc @davidwondrich.bsky.social

"There's only one Big Apple. That's New York." -- "Around the Big Apple with John J. Fitz Gerald" column, New York Morning Telegraph, February 18, 1924. My annual post. The African American stablehands from the New Orleans Fair Grounds have still never been honored!

Feb. 18, 1924: “Around the Big Apple,” a column by John J. Fitz Gerald, appears for the first time in the New York Telegraph. The sportswriter has to explain that the title of his feature refers to New York. In time “the Big Apple” will become the city’s well-known nickname. 1/3
