Start your own website. Run your own blog. Use decentralized and open-sourced platforms

@ghost.org is a great open-sourced blogging platform and website builder
Pixelfed is doing great work for images and runs on the social web

Support open social projects so your homes on the web don't fall apart

We just released a new spec for the data structure powering our decentralized data protocol. We have a very similar mission to #atproto, but with a very different designs. I’ll talk about the protocol itself more soon. Let’s talk about graphs.

GRC-20 is inherently schemaless. This enables maximum composability and flexibility as anybody can add any data to any entity without the tooling friction of typed schemas and tables. This doesn't mean we can't layer types and schemas on top of the graph 1/x

“Value” of data can mean anything to anybody. It’s not just monetary value. It could be culturally valuable. Or scientifically valuable, or just personally valuable. It’s up to individuals or communities to decide. But it all comes down to curating the web of trust.
There’s a huge design space for inserting trust mechanisms when we have a world of open, public data on the Internet. It’s not just around identity, ie “Is this person who they say they are?”, but also “Is this person’s data valuable?” Once it’s framed this way there’s lots of interesting things 1/X
I'm inventing a new term, "trust fatigue", but I haven't nailed down the definition yet.

I think there's a human tendency to want to put all your eggs in one basket in terms of who you trust, because making new decisions about who to trust is exhausting.

Such a small, fun, whimsical thing that perfectly encapsulates the vibes here

I made a thing!

I was playing around with the AT protocol and as a little experiment I made a website that visualises activity around Bluesky: nightsky.hctr.dev

It listens to all new posts and shows them as little stars across a night sky 🌃

Every star is someone, somewhere, posting something
Nightsky | hctr.dev
See live conversations from all over Bluesky as a dynamic night sky

I love that I'm seeing people actually just post random topics and start random conversations instead of being burdened by optimizing some hidden, ever-changing algorithm. Being able to choose algorithms helps a lot too.

one thing bluesky does better than any other app i’ve ever used is drive conversation. why? because it _incentivizes_ conversation. not through algorithms or through some technological trick. but because the community itself thrives off of that conversation.

We’ve landed on similar ideas for our decentralized data network. RDF has conceptually interesting properties that fails all the needs of modern dev tooling. We use triples for KV data and relations from property graphs to create the ad-hoc relationships between entities. 1/x

It’s clear that if there was a giant network of composable data on #atproto it would be generally useful. But why would companies whose entire moat is their data being siloed ever put their data on the open composable network? How will companies make money on the protocol? Who will build apps?

As someone building decentralized data systems, I have a lot of to say about the design of Bluesky and
@atproto.com, but mostly excited to see people actually building out composable, open data systems. Hopefully we see some real-world adoption outside of Bluesky and social
