In the next essay from our Embers of the Ottoman Empire folio, “Stamps and Ink,” Liora R. Halperin recalls finding a curious collection of stamps—as well as tensions between Jewish groups during the British Mandate in Palestine.

Somehow, the stamps concretized an important record of their story. They showed how these people navigated the transition to British political and Zionist communal rule with an ambivalent mix of national pride, grievances about neglect, and questions about whether and how to contribute to the Zionist project in ways that honored the legacies of their families.
