the reason maya's so attached to ixquic is bc she mirrors her true feelings, and if she can save her, she can save herself. alas, her doubt in following her dream, wanting to save everyone to her own detriment, and recognising repressed emotions and loneliness are all maya's struggles she won't face

This reveals her own doubt in following her father's dream, due to the catalyst being his death. Maya Amano outside the Silverman Manor, with the same pained expression when speaking with Tatsuya again. "I don't think Ixquic's really a bad girl. If I can, I want to save her too. Haha, am I too nosy when it comes to this stuff?" This reveals her desire to save everyone but herself, and her noticing traits of herself in another. Maya Amano in the Kuzunoha Detective Agency, saying to Tatsuya behind a ceiling fan, "That girl's repressed emotions are just coming out in an ugly way. I'm sure she's not really a bad person." Her expression is neutral, but she's admitting a truth about herself. In the next dungeon, her Shadow will let out her repressed emotions in an ugly way. Maya Amano right after defeating Ixquic in the Smile Hirasaka bathrooms, kneeling beside her with a straight face. Maya says, "She must never have had any proper adults play with her... Don't worry! If that ever happens, I take full responsibility." This reflects how she was the 'proper adult' for her childhood friends, while also revealing the lack of parents around when she was a child, or ascribing her success to the adults who played with her. Given we never meet her mum, odds are it's the former.
