“But I couldn’t help wishing its author took more risks. ‘Great writers of fiction,’ Arnold Bennett tells us, ‘are by the mysterious nature of their art ordained to be amateurs.’ The author of The Sleepers is many things, but an amateur isn’t one of them.”

Great review by a great writer!
At The Metropolitan Review I reviewed Matthew Gasda's new novel, The Sleepers. Thanks to Ross Barkan & company for siring TMR, one of the more exciting places for new writing on the web right now.

So you’re saying I was saying, no, no, no, no, read her previous one and it was awful, no, no, looks interesting, no, no, read that one and it was okay, to a list of books that don’t exist?

Ben at @beyondthezero.bsky.social and I talked about my hopes for my main character that I struggled to like, how a creative writing professor ends up in Alaska, and my next book that was written in anger. Give it a listen (and if you haven't listened to his stuff before, it's great)! #litfic 💙📚🖋

Funny that the bladder is considered more revolutionary than the heart or even an eye. I’d think it would be one of the easier transplants. Just sticking a new bag in there.
Surgeons in Southern California have performed the first human bladder transplant, introducing a new, potentially life-changing procedure for people with debilitating bladder conditions. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/18/h...

Every single book on this list is a big publishing book. (And I’m sure every book was on their “most anticipated list” too.)

My book, THE DELEGATION, is out today. Everyone shows the cover, and I’ll show you that, but the first page will tell you whether you want to read the thing or not.

New interview on my new novel, The Hotel Egypt.

Topics include: writing into misogyny; writing the Trump woman; Sally Rooney’s pencil skirts; not being an ordinary artist; and one meaning of Jenny in Corona’s first edition book cover.

Enjoy and buy the book!

It appears nobody reads my posts on here. Does this mea I can treat this site like it’s a diary? The galleys for my book went out a few days ago and my anxiety is through the roof. When I’m writing, I don’t expect that anybody will actually read my work. But now they will.
